Emelec 0 – 0 Barcelona SC [F]

Las Electricas showed up to play in the Guyaquil Clasico. It was only their 5th point all campaign, but even sweeter for coming against their long time rivals.

Karela United 2 – 0 Legon Cities FC

The goodtimes ran out for the Royals as Karela continued to vie for a spot in the African Champion’s League. Despite the recent strong form, Legon is still just 6 points clear from relegation with ten games to play.

Stromsogodset 2 – 1 Rosenborg BK

Rasmus Wiedesheim Paul got the Trolls off to a great start by capitalizing on a defensive mistake. But it all came undone in the last half hour when our dreamboat Kristoffer Zachariassen ceded a penalty and then Stromsogodset continued their near ceaseless pressure to win it in the end.

International Affairs Update

Three matches is our low mark for the year, but let’s take a moment to recognize the other players in international duty.

Asian World Cup Qualifiers

Kiran Limbu Chempjong wrapped up Nepal’s campaign with a strong showing against Australia. (Nepal lost 3-0, but making 9 saves was a pretty good shift for Kiran.) We hope to see him again someday and wish him well as he leaves Punjab.

Chang Hoon Kwon had a short shift in the lopsided drubbing of Sri Lanka and another great outing in South Korea’s win over Lebanon to top their World Cup Qualifying group (next to our most favorite-est player right now: Hyung Min Son)…Chang Hoon is, like Kiran Limbu, headed back home to play for Suwon Bluewings in Korea. But may not stay there for long.

North American World Cup Qualifiers

Dayne St. Clair didn’t get another go in goal as Canada let top keeper (and Red Star Belgade’s choice man) Milan Borjan, complete the first step and help the side get all the way in to the final stage of qualifying.

South American CopaAmerica

Getting the start in the opener of the CopaAmerica, Pedro Ortiz was unlucky to give up the only goal of the match to Colombia, and unluckier still to get zero offensive support in the match.

European Euro Championships
It’s easy to pick on him…

The Euro Tournament is in full swing and so are some of our favorite players. Well..not Christian Gunter, who has has still yet to see the field for Jorgi “Love my Boogers” Low (though let it be a sign to you that you can pick your nose and still win a world cup). Rolland Sallai was vital to helping Hungary keep reigning champs Portugal scoreless (until he left the field and they ran up a 3-0 lead). Jan Gregus got a late run out to shore up the defense in Slovakia’s win over Poland. Meanwhile in two first ever tournament wins, Phillip Leinhart kept the defensive shape while David Alaba ran rampant for Austria, and Jakku Raitalta and Robin Lod stood side by side in their victory over Denmark (though that win was…awkward).

Major Tournament Moments

It’s worth noting that Finland’s victory came after Denmark’s most dynamic playmaker (and another of our favorites), Christian Eriksen suffered a mid-match heart attack. Eriksen’s teammates wanted to play on, and Finland made the most of it…but clearly there are a lot more important things than a game winner in that moment.

Speaking of more important things: Structural Racism! England has created a routine of kneeling in protest of said racism, and…because people will do stupid things when they don’t understand something…some are booing that (notably, supporters of anti-immigrant British politics, and hard right wing Slavic countries (looking at you Hungary)). Kneeling won’t end racism, but creating an antagonistic atmosphere against calling it out actively prolongs it. So, again, Screw You Systemic Racism.

Player of the Week

With very little to choose from in the club side, let’s shout out Chang Hoon Kwon coming into his own for South Korea this last week. Well done Kwon!!

Legon Cities 2 – 1 Uncle T United [Cup]

It took a little bit, but the Royals took the win at home over Uncle T. Richmond Antwi had to shoulder the load with both strong runs and a booming shot from outside the box in order to overcome the lower tier side. But a win’s a win and progress is progress. And HEY! Asamoah Gyan was on the pitch for 30 whole minutes!

Deportiva Cuenca 6 – 0 Emelec [F]

This would be one of those times I’m ok NOT seeing highlights. Oof…

Arna-Bjornar 0 – 2 Rosenborg [F]

Rosenborg’s ladies’ side remains defensively perfect this season and unbeaten in their entire league history. Again Lisa Marie Utland and Julie Blakstad drove the attack but credit also goes to Kristine Nøstmo on her third straight shutout.

SC Freiburg 5 – 0 Meppen [F]

Meppen needed a win to have a chance at avoiding relegation. Freiburg did not oblige. the onslaught started quickly with Janina Minge. Rebecca Knaak, Sandra Starke, and Marie Muller, quickly followed and Meppen’s hopes were truly dashed

Legon Cities 1 – 0 Inter Allies

The Royals have finally found their form, winning their third straight this time courtesy of Cephas Doku’s looping header, didn’t hurt that Inter Allies is sitting at the bottom of the table, but they all get you three points. We saw the return of Fatua Duda in replacing Sylvester Sackey after an ugly injury early on in the match. Duda’s return was…adventurous…but effective none the less.

Minnesota Grows the Game

There will be a new team in our community next spring, as Minnesota welcomes a pre-professional women’s league. The team will be led by a women’s ownership group, and aim to create an inclusive and equitable organization. It will not officially be linked to Minnesota United, but as we want to include the top talents in the local areas around each side, we’ll be happy to include them in next year’s boot room. (Even more so if they look to the west and see just how awesome University of Montana players are….dare we dream of a Mimi Eiden Homecoming?!?)

International Affairs Update

While most of our teams are out of action, we can bring a few updates from a few players who saw the field in international matches this week.

Asian World Cup Qualifiers
We don’t get a lot of traffic from China anyway…

Kiran Limbu Chempjong pitched a shutout against Taiwan (unless you’re a foolish autocratic Winnie the Pooh look a like, in which case he did it to “Chinese Taipei”). But he ceded 3 goals to Jordan. So…a mixed bag as befits Nepal’s standing in Asia.

Chang Hoon Kwon had a stellar showing in South Koreas win over Turkmenistan. A goal an assist and a heap of great passes made him man of the match.

North American World Cup Qualifiers

Dayne St. Clair kept a clean sheet in another drubbing for the Canucks (It did help that opponents Aruba didn’t get a shot off).

In the last tune up qualifiers before the Copa America neither Pedro Ortiz nor Dixon Arroyo saw the field.

European Euro Championships

Most Euro teams are in their final tune ups for the big tournament, but Kristoffer Zacharriassen did make his debut for Norway’s national team in a match with no impact on anything. Hopefully he can influence events a littl emore soon. Meanwhile Jakku Raitalta turned in a good showing in a discouraging loss for Finland (dropping to lowly Estonia isn’t going to boost much confidence, I’m afraid). Jan Gregus and Phillip Leinhart battled to a draw in Austria and Slovakia’s warm up. Meanwhile Christian Gunter was a substitute for Germany in both of their games, while Ermedin Demirovic was wrapped up without a shot on goal in Bosnia’s match with Denmark,

Player of the Week

We are unabashed Rosenborg fans here, and as Lisa-Marie Utland continues the thrilling showings of excellent and dominant performances by Troll Jenta attackers. She’s been in superb form to start the season, and she is our player of the week (shown here hoisting long time Boot Room Fav Julie Blakstad up for a hug)

Standings Update

Freiburg’s women’s side took their season bow this week, putting another team in the clubhouse for the time being. More substantially, Rosenborg continues their quest to repeat as champions closing the gap on the Griz at the top of the standings and Legon Cities leaps up again to fourth place

Sandefjord 1 – 2 Rosenborg [M]

It was not pretty, but it was effective for Rosenborg. A fine showing in goal from Andre Hansen kept Sandefjord at bay and made up for some sloppy defense, and Guillermo Mollins’ stoppage time slap dash strike secured the three points.

Rosenborg 3 – 0 Kolbotn [F]

In their first match against our first favorite Troll Jenta (Marit Clausen) and her new team, the ladies of Rosenborg looked completely unfazed. The incessant attack put Rosenborg in command early on and kept them there when, despite a goalless first half, the three goals came quickly after with the force of Bragstad, Blakstad and Utland.

Real Salt Lake 1 – 1 Minnesota United

While the Loons were lackluster (again) on the field, they have more than a few injuries to contend with (and a new striker in Adrien Hunou who is still finding his feet with the squad). There were chances created, but quality shots were still hard to come by, here’s hoping Bebelo Reynoso is ready to go for the next part of the season (and that Tyler Miller shares goalkeeper secrets with Dayne St. Clair)

Emelec 4 – 1 LD Juvenil [F]

I told you it was a matter of time! Sure enough, Las Electricas showed up to play and brought home a big win with four mighty goals. (Again…highlights would be helpful, but for now let’s enjoy this big smile from Josylene Borbor after the side’s second goal).

Ashanti Gold 0 – 1 Legon Cities FC

The Royals got a second win in a row (something about Ashanti Gold allows them to be in fine form), and with a final ruling giving them the win over Ebusa a month ago, that makes 4 out of 5 for Legon Cities. This time they capitalized on some very questionable Ashgold decisions, and with Victorien Adebayor causing trouble every where they turned, Isaaka Mohammed knocked in a rebound from a free kick just before half time to get the win.

Rosenborg 4 -2 Stabaek[M]

The Trolls’ defense continues to be suspect, but as long as the attack is flying as high as it has been lately, many sins can be forgiven. Again Kristoffer Zachariassen was a human Visa Card (everywhere you wanna be), but it was nice to see Emil Ceide show up with some sparkling play to lead the come back in the second half as well.

Emelec 0 – 0 Independiente del Valle [M]

Emelec’s offense was shut down for the first time in the local league since March 21st. With two matches left in the first half of the season, the apertura title is almost in grasp, so a slip in form is not the end of the world, but with little margin for error and a match against 2nd place Barcelona on tap, the pressure’s only going to build.

Staggies Say What?!?!?

So…we’re Ross County through and through. That’s our origin, that’s our family symbol, that’s our side. But the last week has uh….not been great for County.

Mr. MacKay (Scottish Sun)

John Hughes’ departure was understandable. The team’s replacement hiring of Malky MacKay was less so. MacKay has a manager’s pedigree. He’s got experience at the top flight of England and the international level. He’s also got a habit of insulting people based on their sexuality, race, and religion. So….not ideal.

County Fans were understandably upset by the appointment, and we’d like to join them in their protest. We will follow and support the Stags during the matches during McKay’s tenure, but we won’t purchase any club paraphernalia during that time.

But just in case there were any bridges left untouched, the team then released a number of players including long time club fixtures and relegation saviors Ian Vigurs and Michael Gardyne. No farewell, no final lap of honor, not ideal. So yeah, Staggies we love you but…whoo boy.

Ghana’s Cup Action

While most of the next week will feature the women’s game, we will get a few matches for Legon Cities, including their Round of 64 tie against the junior side “Uncle T United”, there’s not much to say about that except, once again…there’s a team in Ghana called Uncle T United. (They would be our team if we had an Uncle T…but until then, Legon Cities it is!)

International Affairs Ahead

With the onset of summer comes a plethora of intenational contests: qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Asia and North America, and the top continental prizes in Europe and South America. As we hit this shift in seasons, we’ll provide periodic updates on the players that we track most closely.

Asian World Cup Qualifiers

Recent Punjab Keeper, Kiran Limbu, will be in the goal during World Cup Qualifiers for Nepal. He may have returned to Nepal this offseason, but he’s still number 1 in our hearts. (At least among keepers in Asia… #ClaireHowardForever). Meanwhile Chang Hoon Kwon will try to build on a good year of development at Freiburg with a few appearances in South Korea’s qualification campaign.

North American World Cup Qualifiers

Dayne St. Clair is the lone representative fighting for World Cup qualification in North America standing alongside the Canadian National Team

While the tournament has bee in a terrible state of flux (owing to unrest and covid cases in the original hosts they moved to the one country that has plenty of BOTH! Brazil), Emelec’s reps are quite consistent. Pedro Ortiz and Dixon Arroyo will represent Ecuador

European Euro Championships

It’s a Freiburg heavy contingent, with Roland Sallai playing for Hungary, Phillip Leinhart in the back for Austria, Ermedin Demirovic likely to lead the line for Bosnia, and Christian Gunter hoping to hit the pitch for perennial power Germany. Minnesota will have a few attendees as well, with Jan Gregus repping Slovakia and the teammates of Robin Lod and Jakku Raitalta seeking to boost the Finns in their first major tournament.

Player of the Week

In the last few weeks, Legon has gone from bonafide bottom dwellers to confident mid-table side. (Sure there’s still only 3 points between them and the drop, but the form and style have been awfully encouraging.) To that end let’s recognize the biggest game changer the Royals have, Niger’s Victorien Adebayor whose impact goes beyond the score sheet into creating and complicating opponent plans.

As we head into the summer slowdown, Rosenborg is making the most of their continued presence on the pitch and (in addition to topping both men’s and women’s leagues), are sneaking up behind the University of Montana. Meanwhile, Legon Cities jumped ahead of Ross County and is almost set to pass up top tier finishes in Grenoble and Punjab (despite struggling to escape the bottom of Ghana’s table).

Vozdovac 0 – 0 Javor

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t pleasant. But it did the job. The 0-0 draw kept the Dragons above the line (thanks in no small part to Rad Beograd falling behind and only managing an equalizer in their match–hence the anxious watching at the video’s end.). Vozdovac survived, and will still stand with the SuperLiga come the fall.

Emelec 2 – 0 Tolima [M–Copa Sudamerica]

Starting off the final run of Copa Sudamerica games at home, Emelec was full of optimism. When Tolima again stymied the attacking force through the first half there might have been some nerves. But Sebastian Rodriguez and Dixon Arroyo took charge in the midfield in the second half, creating repeated problems for their opponents. An own goal for the Colombians and a later strike from Joao Rojas put los bombillos on the precipice of the next round of South American action.

Rosenborg 3 – 2 Brann [M]

Kristoffer Zachariassen is special. I mean, he looks like Ted from Schitt’s Creek which is pretty special in the first place, and then he notches a hat trick to lead a comeback win at home. Seriously, this man is quite accomplished and, as the attacking corps still looks to find its feet, he’ll be vital to boosting the Trolls’ chances in the league.

Tolouse 3 – 0 Grenoble [M–Playoffs]

After all the build up, it all came undone for Grenoble. Though Brice Mableu saved an early penalty, Toulouse buried the rebound and cruised the rest of the way. Just wait till next year, and the very real hope that the Alpiners will be set to stake their claim on a top spot.

Rosenborg 2 – 0 Staebek [F]

The most dominant side in MacKenzie Cup 2020 is back in action, with Rosenborg hosting, and besting Staebek. After last year’s undefeated season, there’s reason to hope for the same this time around, and Lisa-Marie Utland started things out well with a great first goal of the campaign, and the whole team looked as fluid and integrated as if they were in mid season form.

Frankfurt 3 – 1 Freiburg [M]

A long shot for Europe got a lot longer when Freiburg ceded a penalty in the second half, and longer still, when they could only manage one goal in response. They were truly dead after Frankfurt’s last two goals won it. (Even though it wasn’t enough for them to jump into Champion’s league places). A solid, but unspectacular middle of the table finish for the Griffins. But the continued strength of Vincenzo Grifo and Christian Gunter plus the emergence of Baptiste Santamaria bodes well for the future.

Tecnico Universario 1 – 0 Emelec [F]

Las Electricas continue to search for their first goal and first win. Soon…it’s destiny.

Mushuc Runa 1 – 2 Emelec [M]

In the middle of their continental adventure, los bombillos made time to face off with the resurgent Runa. Throughout the whole time period, the replacement attack force of Sebastian Rodriguez and Alejandro Cabeza have bolstered the attack and kept them in great shape. It certainly helped that Mushuc Runa ended the match with an ugly clothesline in the box, but Emelec still had to convert

Hoffenheim 4 – 2 Freiburg [F]

Sigh…sorry Freiburg Frauen

Legon Cities FC 2 – 0 Aduana Stars

Legon had all the legs they needed for this pell mell race towards goal. Jonah Attaquye was a huge part of it with the first goal and multiple additional opportunities created to boost Legon with another win. (Sidebar, Thank you StarTimes for commentary…it’s much more fun than me trying to slow mo videos to spy player numbers)

Rosenborg 2 – 3 Molde [M]

Again Kristoffer Zachariassen had a beautiful header, but it was not enough to overcome some extra sloppy defending both at the start and the close of the match. Rosenborg continues to click on the attack..one the back foot…not so much (oh for a return of Tore Reginiussen).

Emelec 1 – 4 Talleres [M–Copa Sudamerica]

Coming in Emelec controlled their destiny. When Talleres took the lead within a quarter of an hour, it started to slip away, and before you knew it the team that had led the group from the first day was on the outside of the knock out round looking in and wondering what went wrong.

You Go Yogi

After saving Ross County from relegation, John Hughes step aside from his position at Ross County. Now the board will look for a new manager to boost the team up the table next year.

Bringing the Frank Pain

The Loons finally finished the transfer for Argentine winger Franco Frangapane (who you might remember from such contests as against Emelec a few weeks ago…but not this week, thankfully). The Loons’ offense has been real bad ineffective, so with him and Frenchman Adrien Hunou there’s hope that the second half of the season is more successful (or at least entertaining) than the first.

Player of the Week

We had hoped there would be some heroics in Belgrade to award, but aside from one critical tackle there just wasn’t much going on. Meanwhile, it’s just to easy to award Kristoffer Zachariassen especially when he Krist-offers so many goals! (Seriously, I’m really enoying watching Schitt’s Creek with your mom and these are almost too easy to write.)

Vozdovac, Grenoble, and the Freiburg men hit the break this week. As we hit the summer there will be several teams taking a break while national team competitions grab the spotlight. We’ll keep updating events as Rosenborg and Emelec try to track down the Grizzlies.

Legon Cities 2 – 1 Liberty Professionals

Both sides levvied a barrage of shots but brought the on target drama when it counted most. Liberty took the lead with 10 minutes to go, gave it back on an own goal 5 minutes later and lost it when Jonah Attaquye came through just before the final whistle through the goalie’s legs.

Ross County 2 – 1 Hamilton Academical

With the Accies in a win or else situation, they came out and took the lead on a well placed free kick. As soon as the Staggies had their backs against the wall, they fought to get it back. Jordan White led the charge, notching both assists on clever back passes. With that County gave themselves a fighting chance before the final game on Sunday.

Minnesota United 1 – 0 Vancouver Whitecaps

The wait is over, the Loons have their first points. Much was made of the team’s choice to bench young keeper Dayne St Clair, who had been fine while the offense sputtered. Tyler Miller was equally effective, while the attack (Lod, Reynoso, Dotson, and Abila) finally looked dangerous. So, naturally the coach gave the credit to Miller because correlation equals causation.

Rosenborg 5 – 0 Viking [M]

Trondheims top side looked the part at home in Lerkendal. Markus Henriksen’s early departure after scoring the opening goal seemed ominous. But Carlo Holse’s arrival led to the Dane contributing two assists and Kristoffer Zachariassen ran the show in the center. Half the league has yet to play, but Rosenborg looks well equipped for the season to come.

Freiburg 2 – 2 Bayern Munich [M]

Munich already have their 31st title (9th straight) in hand, but Freiburg held their own regardless. After an ugly foul in the box set up Robert Lewandowski for a record tying penalty (his 40th of the campaign). Mark Flekken has turned up to stake a claim to the goal (and deny Lewandowski a record setter), and Christian Gunter delivered a scintillating run to level the match before time. With one game to go the Griffins remain mathematically (but not really logically) in the hunt for Europe.

Partizan Belgrade 3 – 0 FK Vozdovac

For a little while it looked like the Red Dragons could keep up and get a vital point. But Aleksander Bogdanjovic’s own goal ensured that Vozdovac’s last game would be the decider (the extra goals by Partizan made goals even more important).

WAFA 1 – 0 Legon Cities FC

While Asamoah Gyan finally saw the field for LCFC, it didn’t make a difference. The Royals still haven’t had consecutive points since February, or consecutive wins since January. (Good news, those opponents are coming up in a couple weeks so…fingers crossed)

Grenoble 1 – 0 Rodez [M]

The Alpiners were held in a scoreless draw for most of the match. Long enough to feel Auxerre breathing down their neck and feel the frustration of every scuffed shot. Then a wide cross from Anthony Belmonte missed Marcellin Anani who took a (admittedly exaggerated) tumble. But that set up Jessy Benet for the penalty, the win, and the guaranteed home field for the first round of promotion playoffs.

Emelec 1 – 0 Guayquil City [M]

It took a while but Emelec got what they needed when a late penalty gave Sebastian Rodriguez the winner at home. Emelec now tops Ecuador (though not our little league).

Minnesota United 1 – 0 FC Dallas

It took the Loons even longer to get their winner but flying Fin Robin Lod notched the game’s only goal with a vital poke in stoppage time. The Loons have some polarizing data. First hand accounts report their haplessness. Stats suggest they could be 4-0-2 instead of 2-0-4. At this stage that’s the difference between second and eleventh in the league. One non-stat to bear in mind: Emmanuel Reynoso shoots the ball so hard factory machines who assembled it wince.

Motherwell 1 – 2 Ross County

When Owen woke up the Staggies were taking the pitch. When Alex joined us, doom surrounded us (an early deficit and Kilmarnock leading their match). As I popped cinnamon rolls in the oven, I implored you to say “cmon you Staggies!!”. Moments later Ian Vigurs grabbed the equalizer with one of the most beautiful bits of footwork and placement you’ll ever see to shift the momentum. Michael Gardyne’s winner was a delightful bit of icing on the saved season.

Bodo/Glimt 2 – 2 Rosenborg BK [M]

Facing the title holders had Rosenborg a bit behind the ball. Though they had to come back twice, they did the needful as Carlo Holse notched another goal.

Carneras UPS 2 – 0 Emelec [F]

I’ve said before, I will say again: my kingdom for highlights.

Grenoble 2 – 0 Paris FC [M]

The first of three stages to reach the promised land of Ligue 1 got off to a great start with Marcellin Anani delivering both a solid header and a vicious rebound to grab the lead. From then on in fell to Brice Mableu and his defense (especially Adrien Monfray and Haruna Demba) to stymie the attack. But when they were finally able to launch a counterattack late in the game, the fresh legs of Willy Semedo sped all the way to the box to deliver the clincher.

Royals Rouser

Few things are quite as fun as seeing Legon Cities’ celebration in just coming to the stadium (also, Asamoah Gyan, it’s the nicest bus in Ghana…why are you riding your fancy car just to sit around and watch…?)

Quo Vadis?

That’s latin for “What’s Next” (a favorite phrase around our family). Ross County is now safe, though unfortunately soon to be without the services of some very strong loanee players (looking at you Leo Hjelde of Norway).

But Grenoble marches on to face Toulouse in their second round on Friday. The Alpiners are definite underdogs against the third place side that was so close to automatic qualification. But surprises do happen, and with an awesome hashtag on Grenoble’s account right now, I really hope they continue to happen. (Together we will reach the peaks)

Serbia’s Swan Song

Vozdovac’s season ends this weekend. Their situation is marvelously simple: beat Javor and they stay up. Drop points and they have to hope results go their way.

Freiburg’s Farewell

With one match left in the Bundesliga, the Griffins are still in the hunt for a spot in European competitions. They’d need to beat Frankfurt (themselves fighting for a spot in the Champion’s league). They’d also need Stuttgart, Munchengladbach, and Union Berlin to lose (all of them are playing sides battling for Europe or a place in the league). So there’s plenty to watch for.

Player of the Week

It’s hard to choose between superlative moments and surpassing support, luckily this week’s player of the week was supportive throughout the season’s final stages and had an absolute golden moment on the weekend: Ian Vigurs was every bit the captain you want to see for Ross County and his thunderous shot that saved the Staggies season was an absolute beauty. Thank you Ian Vigurs.

Michael Gardyne is probably congratulating Ian on staying up, but maybe it’s winning this little honor instead.

Tolima 1 – 1 Emelec [Copa Sudamerica]

Los Bombillos had to wait two days to get their match against Colombia’s Tolima (and it happened in Peru just to keep things safe). For the first time in the continental contest Emelec ended up falling behind and then, only managing one point in the contest. The extraordinary circumstances will hpoeful make it a rare occurrence but we’ll have to see.

Guayquil City 1 – 0 Emelec [F]

Las electricas are back in action against one of their local rivals. Unfortunately the return wasn’t quite as thrilling as they might have liked and after grinding out the narrow defeat, they’ll have to reorganize and bounce back quickly.

Hertha BSC 3 – 0 Freiburg [M]

This should be exhibit A in the more maddening pieces of inconsistency in Freiburg’s season. A crushing loss to a relegation side…oof…

Auxerre 1 – 1 Grenoble [M]

While Grenoble jumped out to an early advantage courtesy of an Auxerre own goal it couldn’t stand up for the whole match. Brice Mableu saved a possible winning penalty in his return to the lineup, but the rotating fullbacks (Abdel Abdallah, and Haruna Demba) couldn’t contain Auxerre fully.

Barcelona SC v Emelec [M]

Because Emelec had to push back their match against Tolima and change course to Lima Peru, they weren’t going to be ready for their big battle against rivals Barcelona SC and so, the match was pushed back until further notice.

Colorado 3 – 2 Minnesota United

Seriously. I mean…Seriously. The Loons had a 2-0 lead within a half hour. And then they just crumbled like a cicada shell under a toddler’s foot.

Vozdovac 4 – 2 Napredak

A brilliant and well earned win for the Red Dragons. They didn’t so much get over the line as they did batter the door down until Napredak had to give in. Milos Stojcev’s brace was well earned, but I was particularly heartened to see the distribution and daring accuracy of winger Aleksander Stanislavejic who had a critical part to play in the first three goals. The win vaulted them past Napredak in to 10th. Of course that’s till just two points clear of relegation…so…there’s much to do, especially before facing Partisan this weekend.

Koln 1 – 4 Freiburg [M]

Hmmm…note to self: when Nils Petersen and Vincenzo Grifo play most of the match things seem to go markedly better….I wonder why…

SC Freiburg 3 – 1 SGS Essen [F]

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the ladies of Breigsau have such a dominant performance. (And with Magenta Sport sharing only 4 matches of Freiburg highlights all season…it’s even longer since we’ve actually SEEN IT seen it). Again Hasret Kayicki was critical to the win, but she was joined by Naomi Megroz, and Jana Vojtekova.

Ebusa Dwarfs 0 – 1 Legon Cities

It was a solid opening from the Royals, with some sturdy defending (thanks Joseph Adjei) and absolutely rugged attacking (thanks Victorien Adebayor), but then…well…see notes from News section below

Valerenga 1 – 1 Rosenborg [M]

At the start of the Norwegian campaign, the Rosenborg roller coaster got off to a rocky and rainy start. Sloppy defending ceded a slew of chances and–eventually– Even Hovland scored the first goal of the year into the back of his own net. Fortunately, midfielder and unnaturally handsome man, Kristoffer Zachariassen got the equalizer before the half on a fine cross from Vebjorn Hoff. Zachariassen also helped link the team together including new Swedish target Stefano Vecchia. They’ll get another test in a few days, strangely before other teams play their first match.

Emelec 0 – 0 Macara [F]

Las Electricas didn’t have to wait long for their first point of the season, but we’re still awaiting that elusive first goal.

Red Bull Bragantino 2 – 0 Emelec [Copa Sudamerica]

Los Bombillos closed out their travels in Copa Sudamerica in Brazil with their first loss. They’ll be home to wrap up the group stage and will have to be on point to hold on to their slim one point edge over the Brazilian corporate entity (Note: Emelec was founded as a corporate entity, so we don’t have much to brag about…but still)

We love soccer, but it isn’t as important as democratic principles. So, here’s a cheers to all those protesting the militarized police response to peaceful protests in Colombia.

My Kingdom for Clarity in Liga MX

So…there was a playoff in Mexico, not that it was publicized, or discussed, or reviewed around the world. So a month ago (!!) Oaxaca played their last match of the season, a 6-0 thrashing at Zacatecas. Disappointed as we are to miss the end of the year, we’re more confuzzled by the machinations that lead to bottom of the table teams paying fines that help…bottom of the table teams??

Cruelty in Cape Coast

The Royals match with the Ebusa Dwarves was called off after several fans threatened the referee. It only adds to the drama surrounding the Royals as they are desperately scrapping to avoid relegation and mired in a will-they-won’t-they manager sacking affair (with a league winning coach waiting in the wings). Will they get badly needed points from a forfeit? Will other teams accept that? Never a dull moment in Legon.

This weekend sees the end of Grenoble’s regular season campaign in Ligue 2, but may not be the end of their overall campaign. There are three teams fighting for two remaining playoff spots to face Toulouse. Win or draw against Rodez and Grenoble live to fight another day. Lose, and they need either Auxerre (facing recently eliminated Sochaux) or Paris FC (facing relegation battlers Chambly) to lose.

Hughes holds the Staggies high

By the next time we check in Ross County’s season will have come to an end after two crucial games this week. First a game against bottom of the table Hamilton Academical a win there and a loss for Kilmarnock will leave the Staggies safe before their final match. Any other result and the match with Motherwell on Sunday will be an absolute must win. While many County fans seem resigned to their fate (and excited about competing against teams at our level), the financial boon of big sides visiting Dingwall can’t be understated.

Player of the Week

In a week without a lot of victories (sorry Emelec), it feels worthwhile to recognize one of the best showings for one of our many teams fighting off malaise and the drop to a lower league. In that Aleksandar Stanislavejic stands apart for enabling and supporting the vital victory for Vozdovac, just two weeks away from the end of their year.

Werder Bremen 2 – 1 SC Freiburg [F]

Again the Griffins came up short. Despite Stephanie Sanders staking Freiburg to a lead early on, they couldn’t hold on for another 85 minutes.

Atlante 1 – 1 Alebrijes

In the rare mid-week/mid-day match Oaxaca came away with a point. Ricardo Monreal was imperious in midfield picking out great passes only to be thwarted by Atlante’s strong keeper (and Alebrijes’ inefficient attacking). It took a strong run by, and silly foul on Julio Cesar Cruz to crucial penalty to equalize and walk away with the draw.

St. Johnstone 1 – 0 Ross County

Close can’t keep the Staggies clicking. They head into the split just one point out of danger. [Cue the nail biting]

Paris FC 2 – 0 Grenoble [M]

The trip to the capitol was weighted with importance, but even a full strength back line and going a man up for the final 20 minutes couldn’t keep Paris at bay.

Radnicki Nis 0 – 1 Vozdovac

It always throws me off when the RED Dragons wear blue, but maybe there’s something to it. For only the second time in ten matches, Vozdovac got a win. Miloje Prekovic was on the bench for the second straight game, but most of the defensive strength came from center back Aleksander Bogdanovic. Stefan Purtic’s booming long ball to Aleksandar Stanisavljevic caught Radnicki napping and sealed the victory.

Punjab FC 1 – 0 Real Kashmir

The last Northeast derby of the year came out in the Warriors column. Surabh Banwala refused to let his recent struggles define the campaign and made his presence felt everywhere. He pestered the attack and made a daring run up for a header. But it was Chencho Gyeltshen who notched his seventh of the campaign (albeit on his least inventive opportunity) and pushed Punjab to another valuable win.

Freiburg 2 – 0 Augsburg [M]

Despite far less consistency recently, Freiburg remains a solid, dependable side in German soccer. Even with spot starter Guus Til leading the charge, the attack was focused, and the defense was effective (thanks Florian Muller). In particular, team captain and extended contract signed Christian Gunter whose chance creation was second to none.

Emelec 0 – 1 Nueve de Octubre [M]

Emelec’s unbeaten run has ended, dropping them to second place in Ecuador. Surprisingly it came at the hands of new comers Nueve de Octubre celebrating their first season in the top flight for over 25 years.

Norway’s No-Way til May

The Powers that be in Norway’s top leagues have decided to postpone the start of their seasons. Both the Eliteseren (for Males) and Toppserien (for Females) will kick off on the first weekend in May. The Federation’s announcement touched on the risk of increasing case numbers throughout the country, hopefully, some more vaccinations and lots of time help everyone out.

Ghana’s Gone Fishin

To more effectively prepare the national team for upcoming challenges Ghana has delayed the start of the season’s second half until April. (Given that they actually have a better handle on Covid than Norway…that’s understandable). Meanwhile, Legon has started teasing the of the Asamoah Gyan era…again…and celebrating Fatua Duda’s wedding (which, is so much better than all other “celebrity weddings” that I’m going to use it as my go to comparison from now on).

Scotland’s Split

Ross County’s season continues to creep along to the end, but the end will be squeakier than the fresh lemon grass used in Pabrai’s Fresh and Naturelle Lemongrass Ice Cream (available in Kolkata)

The Stags have a point edge on long tenured Premiership side Kilmarnock, and evenly split their first three meetings (1-1-1). The two point edge on finishing last and being guaranteed relegation is better, though they and current cellar dwellars Hamilton Accies have split goals this year 3-3.

Player of the Week

This week saw plenty of good performances that didn’t quite reach a level of remarkable. So we’ll send this award out to someone who both had a good game and set a great example of how to lead their team. Christian Gunter stepped up when Freiburg needed him, just as he has done and will continue to do.

Golukam FC 4- 3 Punjab FC

There’s nothing quite like waking up to an alarm and seeing a swath of updates about a match half way around the world. It was a wild one in the second round of India’s Hero League. Chencho Gyeltshen roared out of the gate with a first half brace to give Punjab a confident 2-0 lead (and a front runner for coolest celebration with the see/speak/hear no evil style). Rupert Nogrum added a third off Gyeltshen’s golden run before the whistle to make it 3-1. In the span of 5 minutes it all came undone as Denny Antwi and an own goal knocked in 3 goals in quick succession to unravel Punjab’s hard work. (It was especially hard after Kiran Chjempong stymied so many so many Kerala attacks, and Ashray Bhardwaj got away with a couple late tackles)

Toulouse 2 – 0 Grenoble [M]

The season’s second half continues to be a struggle for the Alpine side. This week, without talisman Jessy Bennet or most of the stalwart defense they let two goals slipped and fell further behind 2nd place Toulouse for automatic promotion.

Ross County 4 – 1 Aberdeen

The Staggies came out in a new formation with Jermaine Hylton up top and a more aggressive midfield. Sure enough it paid off with two early goals courtesy of Ollie Shaw and Charlie Lakin and two more late goals from Shaw and Hylton. The defensive line did some stout work and the offense capitalized on every opportunity they saw. A pretty great result against the #3 team in the league.

Bayern Munich 2 – 1 Freiburg [M]

Any trip to the Teutonic titans is likely to end in tears, but Nils Petersen almost got an unlikely result. A second half goal equalized once, and a late crossbar rattler nearly did again. sure it was still a defeat, but against Bayern a near tie is something to build on.

Aduana Stars 2 – 1 Legon Cities

After 767 minutes this season, Legon got a goal from open play. Francis Addo got on the end of a long ball when the keeper was MILES out of position and finished it. It wasn’t exactly a mark of talent, more just capitalizing on a MAJOR OPPONENT ERROR. But at this stage, we’ll take it. Oh, the Royals still lost.

Punjab FC 0 – 1 Churchill Brothers

Punjab reverted to a much more defensive style for this match up (shoring up the defense after seeping four goals will do that for you). While the team did vastly improve their defense, and held the opponents goalless for 85 minutes. Once again, a late winner broke their hearts.

Alebrijes 0 – 1 CD Tepatitlan de Morelos

Alebrijes is back in action at home in Oaxaca, but the results remain depressingly consistent. Once again, Oaxaca saw the home side drop a match and slide down the table

New Impeachment High Score

Until this week the most times any President had been impeached was 1, and the most votes any President received for his removal from his own party was 5. Wednesday Donald Trump doubled those scores! He’s been impeached twice and got 10 people to vote against him!

INCOMING!

While most teams are fine tuning in the middle of the season, others are gearing up for bigger transformations before the next season begins. Most clearly, Rosenborg who has picked up more Swedish style than a newly married couple at Ikea. First they bolstered the defense with Adam Andersson and Jonathan Augustinsson to battle for the left back spot vacated by Pa Konate. They also brought on 12 goal man Stefano Holmquist Vecchia from Sweden and brought up Ole Christian Saeter who recently racked up a hat-trick to win promotion for Ranheim.

Player of the Week

Jermaine Hylton gave us a like for his last player of the week performance. For that alone, it’s tempting to award him this again. Most of the Staggies could get a nod given their strong showing, but when it’s that much of a team effort it doesn’t feel right to single out one person. So, despite doing it in a losing effort, the sterling individual performance of Chenchyo Gyeltshen gets the nod this week.

Hibernian 0 – 2 Ross County

Having run to Easter Road on our last trip to Edinburgh, it was very cool to see a stadium that I knew in action. Even cooler was getting to watch part of the match thanks to the magic of technology and the free time of a necessary construction of Alex’s new bed frame. Even though you should have been napping Alex, it was also great to share a match with you and hear you cheer for “the blue guys” with gusto. To cap it all off, County started the year off with a win thanks to some great wing play and counter attacking style with Ollie Shaw scoring against his old club.

Hoffenheim 1 – 3 Freiburg [M]

The German League returned from their haitus faster than most, and it came at a great time for an in form Freiburg. Baptiste Santamaria has gone largely unsung on this blog, but the newcomer has been a vital part of the Freiburg midfield during their return. His booming goal kicked off a great showing, while Vincenzo Grifo picked up his personal best 7th goal in one season.

Liberty Professionals 1 – 0 Legon Cities FC

Again, Legon Cities proved that they have a top tier defense. (They finished third in fewest goals allowed in our table last year). But when the offense again comes up empty it doesn’t take much to lose the match. It makes 630 minutes without a goal from free play…any time Baby Jet….any time…

Ross County 1 – 1 St. Johnstone

John Hughes continued whatever weird science it is that has helped him in the turn around project in Dingwall. Given recent form, every point is deeply appreciated. Ross Draper and Stephen Kelly did a fine job slowing down the game in the middle and keeping things organized.

Clermont Foot 2 – 0 Grenoble Foot 38

2020 was not as great a kick off for Grenoble. They dropped their first competitive match since mid-October and none of our recently rewarded players (Jordy Gaspar, Jerome Mombris, or Jessy Bennet) looked particularly effective. The loss drops them down to third place in Ligue 2 with one more match before the midseason marker.

Transfer Time

The Winter Transfer window opened up and gave fans a lot to dream on. Though fewer players switch sides in the winter, it does happen.

Pieringer’s next step

Rosenborg has had a few players take off with Pa Momodou Konate and Vegar Eggen Hedenstad saying Ta-Ta to Trondheim. Meanwhile young Marvin Pieringer from Freiburg’s youth side left top of the table Freiburg II for more seasoning in the second tier of German soccer (with the well named: Wurzburger Kickers).

Punjab Takes to the Pitch

It’s been 10 months since Punjab played a competitive match, a lot has happened in that time. Beyond, you know, the world and what not, the team has changed owners, names, kits, and a big chunk of players. The season will take place in the Mumbai Bubble (not as cool sounding as the Bombay Bubble…but more respective of the people who, ya know, live there). Fingers are crossed that the new look Warriors shine again.

The new color scheme is for sure in line with the colors most associated with Punjab.

Best as I can tell, only two players return from the 2020 edition of Punjab FC: Defender Anwar Ali, and Midfielder Sanju Pradhan. But the squad will bring on Bhutanese striker Chenchyo Gyeltshen, which will give me a reason to talk about the Land of the Thunder Dragon, and I’m always okay with that.

Player of the Week

Granted, I may be biased because I watched him play, and because I may be wrong in my assessment of John Hughes’ revised game plan, but for me, Jermaine Hylton’s wing play was instrumental to Ross County’s strong showing to start the year.

Standings Update

I’m going to try to keep this up to date more effectively this year than last year, so I’ll use it each week to see if that helps.

Freiburg takes the top spot for now with 3 points in their one game, while Ross County sits second and Grenoble sits in an uncomfortable bottom spot.

I started this blog a year ago thinking it would be a fun thing to do during the season with a little light reflection during the summer. Instead the entire world turned upside down and I found myself trying to make meaning from press releases in March and bubble tournaments in August.

Here’s how things shook out in 2020 among our favorite 11 sides on the planet.

As was becoming apparent by the middle of the summer, the longer Rosenborg’s women went undefeated, the more likely they were to win our trophy. In the end, Rosenborg’s Men struggled to finish off the season gave Minnesota United a closer chance than you might have expected in November.

Emelec wins my money this year for the best showing of a team whose jersey I didn’t own going in (but I’m seriously mulling doing something for Grenoble to shore up my fandom bonafide as they fight for *knock on wood* Ligue 1 promotion)

SC Frieburg’s struggles saw them slip to the middle of the table just above Punjab FC which has been idle for months now, and the Lady Griz must be licking their chops to finish above Asamoah Gyan and company in 2021.

Players of the Year

Rather than choose 1 best of best, given that my entire theme this year was coming together and relying on others, it only made sense to award a full team.

Up top, it should be no surprise that we chose the two most imperious scorers in our year especially given Marit Clausen’s sizzling summer and Farcundo Barcelo’s amazing autumn.

The midfield was trickier. There was no shortage of good candidates, but in the end we couldn’t ignore the excellent run of young Julie Blakstad, the superb creativity of Emanuel Reynoso, or the consistency of Vincenzo Grifo. Kristoffer Zachariassen claimed the last spot due to his goal scoring prowess and excellent control for a Europa League bound side.

We probably could have done more to recognize defenders during the season, but as center back was our own position of choice on the rough and tumble pitches of Great Falls, Montana we were proud to recognize the Grenoble tandem of Jerome Mombris and Jordy Gaspar. On top of that Dominique Heintz seemed to always be the answer to the question “how did Freiburg stop fill in the blank Bundesliga striker king from scoring?” And Alex Iacovitti provided the most iconic image of the most iconic win of the year with his delirious wheeling joy after sealing the win over Celtic.

There was no shortage of great candidates in goal either. We went with Vozdovac’s Miloje Prekovic whose arrival coincided with an excellent unbeaten run for the Red Dragons.

Our bench has two players we really struggled over putting in the top XI: Grenoble’s Jessy Benet and Minnesota’s Michael Boxall, but we know they’ll be ready to step up for a sixty or a six minute shift. We also got a chance to recognize all the other teams in our list: strikers Asier Dipanda, Luisa Espinoza, and Franco Arizala represent Punjab, Las Electricas de Emelec and Alebrijes de Oaxaca respectively. Klara Buhl will be the one we ask to fill in all over the field (the least she can do after leaving Freiburg for Munich). And Fatua Duda holds down the Legon Cities spot in the squad (the Royals may be bottom of our table, but Duda is the unquestioned leader and has kept scores low while the offense sputters).

We were sorry not to find a representative for the Grenoble women’s side (we’d love if the social media squads from Rosenborg and Emelec could show them how its done), and we hope to include more than a few Grizzlies when they finally get back on the pitch this spring.

Doing this project for a year reminded me how much I like both, and also how impossible it is to do both, and parent, and teach, and write what is burning a fire in my brain.

So here’s the plan Stans: I’m keeping this site alive. The annual fee is a small price to pay for keeping track of all the lectures you’re going to get in your life. I won’t post in it as often. (One weekly update, One monthly video with all three of us (barring tantrums), and one monthly commentary).

I’m going to work on writing other things I’m fired up about. But rest assured, I’ll always love sharing lessons with you boys and I’ll love sharing them over soccer matches too.
