Recap

Live from Legon!

Record: 1 – 0 – 0 GF: 4 GA: 0

The Royals did play a round of 32 match against against Koforidua Suhyen (who play near the home of my adoptive dad Braimah Dediako). Kwabena Boateng led the charge with a couple of goals and Nicholas Mensah led a defense that never looked troubled.

Up Next The Royals will have one more cup game in Februrary and we’ll see them restart the season in Karela on February 23rd

What’s the Word in ol’ Freiburg?

Record: 2 – 1- 1 GF: 6 GA: 5

Men looked good in a friendly against Frankfurt. But friendlies aren’t the same thing as competitive matches. And I’m willing to bet they would have taken 0-0 in a friendly and a win against Union Berlin…but it was not to be. Still the clean sheet should boost Noah Atubolu, and comes with another good showing by the young French wing backs Jordy Makengo and Kilian Sildillia.

Those wing backs were back at it again against Hoffenheim but when Manuel Gulde got a terribly timed red card right after Hoffenheim equalized, fear and panic could be felt widely in the crowd. This of course, is where Vincenzo Grifo saves the day by being himself, and so it was with a beautiful winner (3-2).

Grifo was good again in the next match against Freiburg but Makengo and Sidilla weren’t as effective on the same side and Atobolu had another rough outing to keep Freiburg maddeningly inconsistent losing (1-3)

Meanwhile, the big news for the women was the realization that squad leader Janina Minge is asking to leave the club at the end of the season. (This seems to be a bit of a routine for die Frauen where great players aim to go a little higher than the middle of the table…such is the way of things, I suppose.) But the team looked unphased this last weekend with a strong 2-0 win over RB Leipzig led by strong midfield control from Samantha Steuerwald.

Next: The ladies have a Pokal match against Frankfurt, plus league matches agaisnt Duisburg, Bremen. and (ugh) Bayern Munich. Meanwhile the men will balance four league games (including matches against Dortmund and Frankfurt) with the critical knockout matches for the Europa league against Lens.

Grenoble’s Games

Record: 0 – 3 – 1 GF: 5 GA: 7

Amine Sbai had a tremendous outing against Dunkerque with a pair of goals giving the men from the mountains a big lead with only 25 minutes to play. Uncharacteristically, the defense capitulated at the end of the game and could only hold on for a draw. Then the familiar winter malaise set in, and the squad managed only draws the rest of the month (1-1 against Auxerre, and 1-1 against Quevilly, due in large part to heroic penalty saves from Brice Mableu, and more Amine Sbai goals)

Meanwhile the women’s team got eaten up by AS Cannes concending three goals for a less than stellar return to the field, but Abdoulie Bamba Sanyang got the chance to play at the Africa Cup of Nations with Gambia, and team training seem to include playing on the alps…which looks like a whole heap of fun!

Up Next: January was not the boost we were hoping for in the quest for promotion, but we’ll try again in February! The women will face Lyon’s 2nd Squad, and Le Puy, while the men try to break out of their funk of draws with games against Caen, Bordeaux, Troyes and Pau.

Punjab Zindabad

Record: 0 – 2 – 1 GF: 3 GA: 4

Wilmar Jordan got off the mark a lot faster in 2024 than he did in 2023, scoring just 4 minutes into the road game at Chennaiyin in the Super Cup. But, as has been so often the case, after a red card, they were at a disadvantage even though they had a lead. And just when it looked like they might pull out a short handed victory, another goal got past Kiran Chemjong and it was another draw for the Punjabi Warriors.

The chance of a draw against local league titans Mumbai City, was much more enthralling, and indeed Luka Macjen nearly made it so with a pair of goals including one right before the end of the full 90 minutes that would have been quite an accomplishment. But in a continuing pattern, the Warriors ceded a late goal and left as unlucky losers. Their final Super Cup match was a 0-0 draw that doesn’t bear much more scrutiny.

Up Next: I hoped that Punjab could come away with two more wins in the second half of the season, and their best chances may all come in February as they face Hydrabad (the only team below them) as well as Jamshedpur and Bengaluru (two teams with similar defensive problems).

Gotta see this, Alebrijes!

Record: 0 – 1 – 1 GF: 2 GA: 5

Whatever else happens Alebrijes deserves credit for having Mortal Kombat themed season announcement.

While that post is cool and fresh and there are high hopes for new attacker Orlando Ballesteros and major needs in Pablo martinez and Alfonso Luna, much of Alebrijes’ start to their season looked…familiar. The 3-0 beating from Cancun was painfully familiar, and the 2-2 draw with goals by Julio Cesar Cruz rendered underwhelming by late conceded goals was…sigh…yeah…very familiar.

Next We cross our fingers and hope for some kind of change in the routine as Alebrijes run out five times in February…hey, that’s alliteration…it must be a good sign (he said without much real hope)

County’s Bounty

Record: 0 – 1 – 3 GF: 2 GA: 9

Ross County’s usual course of action at this time of year is to bring in a host of young talents who need some match time and use them to boost the squad’s energy. Midfielders Eli King of Cardiff, Branon Khela of Birmingham, Teddy Jenks of Forest Green, Loick Ayina of Huddersfield Town, and Keeper George Wickens of Fulham are this year’s crop of young talents. But the club’s big acquisition was left back Cameron Borthwick Jackson who, until 3 years ago, seemed to be a up-and-coming player at global powerhouse Manchester United…now he is in Dingwall, so, maybe not so up any more but still a player with oodles of potential.

That potential was sorely lacking in the Stags’ 3-0 loss to Aberdeen with Jack Baldwin getting sent off in the 90th minute. It was arguably in even shorter supply when they got dumped out of the league cup 3-0 by lower level rivals Partick Thistle. By comparison a 1-0 loss at Celtic Park was an accomplishment. (thank you for that big save George Wickens!) and the team’s most recent result of a 2-2 draw against Livingston (with some strong defense and a pair of goals from Simon Murray before another late capitulation) was positively delightful.

Next: It seems as though manager Derek Adams strategy of saying that players are really bad hasn’t inspired good play…interesting. Maybe insulting people will make them feel better as they play six times in four weeks…or…not…

Griz Biz

Record: Not in action

We watched the Griz gridiron squad play well in the first half of their national championship game, and missed the second half (which was for the best). And you got to have some extra potato chips so…really there’s a silver lining. We also got to see Skyleigh Thompson celebrate her All-American status.

Up next: Recruiting, training and warming up the next generations.

What’s in Store at Rosenborg?

Record: Not in Action

There was a lot of player movement in and out of Trondheim, but the big news is probably Steinar Lein stepping away from his role as head coach of the women’s team. He’s run the squad for five years and seen them become an absolute force, but when people need a break, they should get it. So thanks Steinar and stay well!

Rosenborg named Anna Josensdal it’s female player of the year, and also said goodbye to her in the same breath, as she makes a move to Hammarby in Sweden (where she’ll meet up with old friend Sara Kanutte Fornes). Rasmus Wiedesheim Paul also joined a Swedish H-team (Halmstad) in Sweden. Ina Birkelund joins up for the midfield from Tromso.

Next: The men have a host of friendlies against fellow Norwegian clubs, but won’t start the season until April

Minnesota a la Mode…ah

Record: Not in Action

Aurora had try outs which means, even five months from the start of the next season, there’s plenty to be excited about. Just as esciting, former Auroroa player Kelsey Kaufusi was drafted to the NWSL (the top Women’s league in America).

Meanwhile, the Loons lost another manager. After not committing to Sean McAuley, Sean McAuley wouldn’t commit to the team, leaving for a confirmed contract in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, Cameron Knowles will take over…for now…When it came to players the Loons focused on adding to the squad with defenders Derek Dodson, and Victor Eriksson, forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith, and midfielders Alejandro Bran and Moses Nyeman.

Up Next: After some regular tune up matches, the Loons hit the field against Austin FC at the end of February

The mens team did do quite a lot of shopping for their roster. They started by resigning Pedro Ortiz to mind the net and Fernando Leon. Then there were they incomers:

What’s the haps at Vozdovac?

Record: Not in action

Vozdovac opened the year knowing that Borisav Burmaz was leaving the club…now headed off for the top flight of soccer in Romania with Rapid Bucharest. Meanwhile, they brought in seven new players, none of whom is older than 22.

Next: The Dragons take flight again with Red Star Belgrade and two more league matches (Napredak, and Mladost Lucani)

September: A Lifetime in a Month

Author’s Note: This month I went back to teaching and running a classroom independently. And Alex went to Kindergarten for the first time. So, daily writing tasks like match recaps turned into a low priority. I have made the command decision to make the recap posts a more limited affair. Rather than 4-5 a month we’ll do three (on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of each month). In part because designing a class and grading 75 assignments a day takes significantly more out of me, and in part because it’s my writing project, and I am answerable to no one…so you’ll get my updates when I write them and you’ll like it non-existent contemporary readers. (kidding)

Also…because I just need to post things so I can move on. I’m not worrying about pictures this time…hope you can imagine things.

Recap

Griz Biz

The University of Montana spent most of it’s last two weeks looking like a force to be reckoned with. Sure there is the win over Utah Tech, and an annual smackdown of MSU Billings (continuing their unbeaten run in the Grandma Di Derby). But they also notched huge milestones for the program. Midfielder Kathleen Atchinson got two goals, but the biggest one came against Oklahoma, one of the biggest sports programs in the country…giving the Griz their first win over a top 5 Conference school. As if that weren’t enough they also welcomed THE Ohio State University (another one of those prestige programs) to Missoula, got a record attendance at South Campus Stadium, and walked away with a draw.

And then things came unglued a bit. They lost to Colorado State at home, and after opening strong against Georgia Southern seemed to go all wibbly wobbly after the first goal dropping two in a row. But regardless of results, the Griz have played well with Ashlyn Dvorak has been great in goal and Delaney Lou Schorr remains a fulcrum in attack (playing the most minutes and notching three assists) and Eliza Bentley is doing your grandma Di (a fellow Billings Senior alum) proud as a super sub. The team righted the ship with a 4-0 win over Miami of Ohio, and draws in Corvallis Oregon and Easter Washington. They might not have been favorites coming into the season, but look out Big Sky, the Griz are for real.

Punjab Zindabad

Punjab kicked off their first ISL campaign. They filled out the roster bringing in Wilmar Jordan Gil to join Luka Macjen up top, and Sweden Fernandes (who is not Swedish) as an outlet on the wings. The defense built up with Suresh Meitei and Mashoor Shareef in front of Shibin Raj (who may push Kiran Limbu for playing time).

The result still has them looking for a way to win at this level. Kicking off against perennial contenders Mohun Bagan led to a 3-1 defeat, but Lucka Macjen did find the net, so let’s keep our hopes up.

Their next mission? Figuring out what exactly the nickname they’ve settled on is. The translations I read said “Punjab da Sher meant Punjab Tigers (you know with the orange), but every social media thing is advocating for Lions, and the hashtag is PunjabDaJosh…or Boys of Punjab…I’m totally lost.

Minnesota a la Mode…ah

The Loons had a much more eventful fortnight than the score lines suggest. Tying personal bogeymen Seattle is a good accomplishment, and hanging a 3-0 drubbing on Colorado at least spurred the Rapids to change their coaching. But the real icing on the cake came just last night, after being stymied at every turn by an intense and talented New England team (also going through their own coaching crisis). The Loons took their fifteenth corner, and in desperation sent up the goalkeeper, Dayne St. Clair, to help out, a move I’ve never, ever seen work before.

So naturally, it worked this time. St. Clair got the assist and the Loons fought back to claim a valuable point.

To celebrate flying high, the Loons then instantly crashed to the ground by taking leads and then losing it against Kansas City, St Louis, San Jose and a bizarre three goal capitulation against LA Galaxy.

What’s in Store at Rosenborg?

Returning from the World Cup, the Trolljenta had a heck of a run. It started with a first round cup match against Stabaek which ended up requiring 30 more regular play minutes, and would have gone to Overtime if not for the very late winner by Camilla Linberg mere moments after Stabek had fought back to equalize. Oddly it was their second end of game decider, with Sara Horte (she of the National Team call up, got an equalizer in the third minute of regular stoppage time. Horte and her crew were much stronger back in league matches with 2 goals allowed over three games, while the offense pumped in 16 from 10 different scorers (three a piece for Selma Magnusdottir and Cesilie Andreassen). The last win came in the cup semi-final against LSK Kvinner, which will give the women of Trondheim a chance to win their first hardware in the black and white

The men on the other hand? Well, my early wondering if the loss to Hearts would send them reeling was answered: a big fat honking yes. Though they had a 4-0 win over Aalesund they were promptly whomped by Tromso and quickly sold off some long-standing leaders including Samuel Rogers and Carlo Holse. (Holse did get his final team goal against Aalesund, and so did the new young gun Sverre Nypan). A draw against Bodo/Glimt and another walloping against Lillestrom.

Live from Legon!

Ghana’s Premier League will kicked off with coach Paa Kwesi Fabin in the standard role of miracle working manager, but most eyes will be on Ebenezer Armegah in his first season as the front target, and captain Nicholas Mensah anchoring the back line.

That was a help in the team’s opening match as 19 year old winger Frank Antwi got a brace to give the Royals an opening day win. (The following 1-0 loss to Accra Lions was much more familiar) The team will be full of different faces this season, but will hopefully bring all the style we’ve come to expect from the Royals ( a lot of boasting and occasional follow through).

Grenoble’s Games

The men of the alps have remained unbeaten, but they also seem to have caught Emelec’s goalless draw bug, using three of 0-0s to stay unbeaten. Brice Mableu shows no signs of stopping and the defense remains stout as ever…but boy I miss Matthais Phaeton, and his attacking prowess. The offense came alive at the end of the month with three straight 2 goal efforts to win three straight matches. Jessy Benet and Pape Meissa Ba have been superb, and might have Grenoble fighting for promotion if they keep this up.

The women started their campaign for promotion from the third division of the French women’s league with with new coach Alassane Diakhite, and they seem pretty excited (and with good reason). They opened with two wins including one against old foes Nimes Metropole and Le Puy. Melanie Charbier led the way and maybe there will be double the reason to celebrate in Grenoble

Next: Guingamp for les hommes; AS Lattes and Clermont Foot for les femmes

County’s Bounty

Following the all to predictable 2-0 loss to Rangers, County bounced back with a little win against Kilmarnock that left their fans….a little cranky…. Simon Murray continues his great form, both driving towards goal and flopping like a spawning Salmon (which made him the focus of much Killy ire), but Ross Laidlaw stood up to a late penalty awarded in spite of Killie getting a goal on the offending play…it was wierd, but that’s life on the dark side.

The Stags seemed to pay the karmic consequences in the second half of the month. After a 1-1 draw against Livvy, they were manhandled by Aberdeen both in the league and in the League Cup Quarterfinals. Add to that a loss at home (to Hearts) and we regret cheering for the floppery.

Take a Sec with Emelec

As the Electricas cram their season into a rapid fire round robin of games it’s worth noting some strong showings. They notched a 3-0 win versus Guayquil City and a 9-0 against LA Familia. But the real drama came against 9 Octubre, where Madeline Ladines launched a gorgeous rocket to grab a tie against the toughest team in the group. (Unfortunately in the return leg, they came up short…but still managed to earn a spot in the final…against 9 Octubre…)

As for the men…there’s predictable news and good news. The goalless streak hit 5 matches before Miller Bolanos (who else) scored. 529 minutes of demanding perfection from Pedro Ortiz, or 529minutes longer than you should ask it of anyone took its toll on Emelec’s standings. A 3-1 win over Mushuc Runa helped as did Jaime Ayovi’s ability to score while not being named Miller Bolanos…but the Bombillos dropped another to Independiente del Valle (though they did score again).

Next; Cumbaya awaits the men, while the ladies kicked off before you likely read this post.

What’s the Word in ol’ Freiburg?

Freiburg was looking their old convincing self in the 1-0 win over Werder Bremen with the inemitable Vincenzo Grifo orchestrating the show. But the wheels came fully off the wagon in 5-0 drubbing against Stuttgart. New top goalie Noah Atubola followed that with another lousy game against Dortmund and the usually steady back line seemed to break down. A reinforced back line got a win over Olympiakos in the first Europa League game and a 0-0 draw against Frankfurt (where a more confident Atubola did great). An unsurprising common denominator: Vincenzo Grifo and Rolland Sallai.

The women kicked off their season against eternal powerhouse Bayern Munich, and after opening with a great goal from Janina Minge, they got a very late equalizer from Svenja Folmli to snatch a great tie.

Next: Men v. Augsburg, West Ham and Bayern Munich; Women v. Bayern

Gotta see this, Alebrijes!

While the 5-0 was bad, Freiburg can take solace that hey didn’t give up the 7 that Alebrijes conceded to Correcaminos. Octavio Paz’s return wasn’t enough to overcome Luis Mouret’s red card. But the team was back in shape with a come back win over Venados as young Kaleth Hernandez and Julio Cesar Cruz continue their mutually beneficial partnership. Cruz remains the primary goal scorer who found the net every time Alebrijes took the field during September (including against Tlaxcala, La Paz and in the big 4-0 win over Dorados). But the best moment for Alebrijes seemed to be when a dog ran on to the field…seems about right.

What’s the haps at Vozdovac?

For the first time in your LIFETIMES, the Dragons notched a win against the prodigious Red Star Belgrade…home to facist gangs a plenty. 3-2 over red star, take that fascist pigs! Borisav Burmaz, Mihajlo Neskovic, and Danilo Teodorovic got goals and though Red Star tried to equalize late, the Dragons took all the points!

(Yes, they lost 2-1 to totally un-prodigious Napredak…and dropped another against Spartak Subotica on a last second penalty, but we still beat the fascist pigs…so I’m calling it a win!)

News & Notes

Cue More Celebrations in Spain

It’s not great when instead of a ticker tape parade, you get a fussilade of negative press coverage and force the executives to become the story instead of the players. But it’s entirely in keeping with the mess that is Spanish Soccer right now. After many uneasy conversations about whether or not you can just kiss women on the lips when you feel like it (YOU CAN’T), both the coach and the Federation President have stepped down…finally.

Mothers of Dragons?

Abby Ostrem and Makenzie Langdok have both signed for Spartak Subotica. Which makes me ask the question, is Vozdovac interested in starting a women’s side? If so, can they start scouting with Aurora and the Griz?

Players

While the routine of these posts is changing, the number of people we have gratitude for is not. So, let’s hear it for four weeks of stellar play. We’ll take this time to shout out those who scored in major results: give it up for the Griz’s Delaney Lou Schorr, Vozdovac’s Borisav Burmaz, Grenoble’s Jessey Bennet and Emelec’s Madeline Ladines.

Recap

Tecnico Universitaro 0 – 0 Emelec (M)

Honestly, at this point I want to know how long Emelec can go with 0 – 0 draws?

Hearts 3 – 1 Rosenborg (M–Europa Conference)

Isak Thorvaldsson scored early to build the hopes of a Rosenborg romp, but Hearts two goals in the second half gave Hearts a decisive edge in the game, in the two-way tie, and in the race to stay alive in the European competition.

North Dakota 0 – 1 Montana Grizzlies

Delaney Lou Schorr picked up exactly where she left off as the Griz’s leading scorer netted the winner against the Eagles!

Hoffenheim 1 – 2 Freiburg (M)

The Bundesliga kicked off with a familiar feeling as Freiburg brought their best game to the table. We actually watched a bit as a family with Alex insisting that the boys from Breigsau were wearing stripes, while Owen thought they were wearing a giraffe print. Whatever he wears, Roland Sallai makes a great threat and his goal was the difference as Freiburg came away with three road points.

Airdrieonens 3 – 4 Ross County (Cup)

The Staggies are still going in the ViaPlay league Cup, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Holding a 3-1 lead after Kyle Turner scored and assisted within 90 seconds, The Stags defense proceeded to give away the store in the last ten minutes with a penalty and a late equalizer for the lower level opponents. Fortunately, Eamonn Brophy came through with a winner in additional time to move the Stags to the last 8.

Zeleznicar Pancevo 0 – 1 Vozdovac

The Dragons got their first win of the season with a quick long ball finding Niska Vujanovic who dribbled and slashed enough to find the net for the game’s only goal.

Grenoble 0 – 0 Troyes (M)

Grenoble didn’t win but they did remain unbeaten for this campaign.

HamKam 3 – 0 Rosenborg (M)

Before the game I was fantasizing that a continued run of good form could help Rosenborg back into European places, but they were too burnt out from the game in scotland to keep up with HamKam

North Dakota State 1 – 3 Montana Grizzlies

The Griz got their second win in the Peace Garden State (all the more impressive because it tripled their win total from 7 previous games there). Within 15 minutes the Griz got three goals off of four shots, as Skyleigh Thompson, Riley Carolan and Eliza Bentler all found the net.

NYCFC 0 – 2 Minnesota (M)

We were able to watch a little of this as a family too…you know, when you weren’t dive bombing your mom or playing drink coaster tricks, but we didn’t get to see a goal. While you were falling asleep Jan Gregus struck back, and then I could see Miguel Tapias and Dayne St. Clair contort their frames to avoid giving up a penalty and save an own goal before Mender Garcia got a final goal to pull away.

Cimarrones 4 – 2 Alebrijes

Julio Cesar Cruz got the first goal, but Cimarrones stormed right back and the Alebrijes dropped another.

News & Notes

We Have a Champion!

Spain became the second country to win both a Men’s and Women’s World cup. Unfortunately it seemed to validate the widely disliked and player loathed coach Jorge Vilda.

It’s an unfortunate story-line to hear developed. But, honestly, coaches don’t play the games, and their effect is often over estimated. I’m going to choose to celebrate Olga’s winning goal, Aitana Bonmati’s golden boot, and Salma Paralluelo instead of Vilda (or the louche of a leader the team is also dealing with).

Other Cup-Dates

Rosenborg’s hopes of moving on to the next round of European competition were dashed with Hearts having a great showing in Edinburgh…but again, it’s Edinburgh, hard not to have a good time there.

Meanwhile, Ross County will stand with their fellow premier leaguers in their cup quarter finals. Next up will be Aberdeen on September 27th, four days after they play Aberdeen in the league…so familiarity will breed…something.

The Loons might not like their quarterfinal flame out against Nashville, but since the Music City Men made it to the final there’s some solace (also a little solace in the fact that Lionel Messi dominated literally EVERYONE)

One of the many things I love about team sports is how substitutes can make as much of a difference for a team as the stars. When that sub helps win a game, it’s great. When he goes out and helps win another…that’s flipping awesome. So Kyle Turner’s gumption stepping up as Ross County’s midfielder merits this week’s award.

Punjab FC 0 – 0 Bangladesh Army (Cup)

Punjab got a point! But they still are looking a little punchless against some toothier competition. Macjen and Mera remain the teams’ focal points, but vision is getting blurry.

Rosenborg 2 – 1 Hearts (M–Europa Conference)

Sverre Halseth Nypan managed a pair of first half assists against a familiar Scottish foe and a rowdy crew of scots on the road. Nypan pressed forward repeatedly to make the right side supremely strong for the Trolls as they hit their seventh straight match without a loss.

Mineros 1 – 1 Alebrijes

The Oaxacans continued to have their testiness translate into some difficult situations. Coach Carlos Guittierez and Esteban Escobedo were carded right before the end of the first half, which left Oaxaca with just ten men (and a worried coach). Julio Cesar Cruz got the equalizer early in the second half which was fortunate as defender Miguel Arreolo was sent packing later in the half and right after the match, goalie Octavio Paz was given a red card to carry over into the next match. So 8 Alebrijes managed to hold on to a draw against 11 Mineros…YIKES

Nashville 5 – 0 Minnesota United (M-Leagues Cup)

Speaking of Yikes…this game. (DJ Taylor was ejected after 34 minutes, and the rest of the defense was totally torched)

Ross County 2 – 0 St. Johnstone

St. Johnstone had more looks at the goal, but County had the best looks…and they didn’t miss. Despite Yan Dhanda having to leave the game after just a half-hour, his replacement Kyle Turner did a superb job and got his first goal for the Staggies on an excellent long ball. Connor Randall found the net as well to thrill the home supporters, but the defense was in fine form and kept the box in front of Ross Laidlaw neat and tidy.

Vozdovac 1 – 1 FK Radnik Surdulica

Vozdovac was fortunate to equalize on an own goal, and even more fortunate not to concede a late winner after Filip Damjanovic left with a red card in the 81st

Grenoble 2 – 0 Paris FC (M)

Mathys Touraine is rapidly becoming the latest in a long line of super strong Grenoble defenders. Like Loic Nestor and Adrien Monfray, he’s been a tremendous asset both in attack and in defense. This week that included starting a great passing combination that lead to his own volleyed finish. His work this week gave Grenoble the needed push to make them one of only three teams to reach 2-0 in the young season

Emelec 0 – 0 Orense (M)

Emelec is also undefeated in this fall’s Ecuadorian campaign even though they haven’t scored a single goal yet. Unlike the six point gap between top and bottom of the French League, Ecuador’s has every team within one game of becoming league leaders.

SV Oberachen 0 – 2 Freiburg (M-Cup)

Oberachen welcomed Freiburg for the first round in the DfB Pokal, and Freiburg never looked remotely bothered. Rolland Sallai and Christian Gunter got the goals, and the boys from Breigsau geared up to start their season in earnest.

Alebrijes 2 – 1 Celaya

Oaxaca’s run of cards on cards on cards came to an end and also lead to their first win of the campaign. It helped to have Kaleth Hernandez strike within 1 minute of kick off. Despite giving up an equalizer, Julio Cesar Cruz nailed a penalty to take the lead.

East Bengal FC 1 – 0 Punjab FC (Cup)

Roundglass Punjab got one more shot at the Durand Cup and their first big result as part of the top flight of Indian Soccer, it went about like the others. Kiran Limbu has done his best, but there’s just not enough to push them past the strong defenses of the two Bengali clubs.

Emelec 22 – 0 La Familia (F)

That isn’t a typo, Las Electricas legitimately put twenty goals past their fellow Guayaquil team and then put two more through. It was 6 in the first 18 minutes and 12 in the first half.

News & Notes

Women’s World Cup-Date

The Women’s World Cup Final is set with Spain facing England on Sunday.

It’s worth noting that Spain is here, frankly, in spite of a host of problems with their national federation. The players, who fought for a decade to have any support for their team at all, have continued to advocate for what they want and need and frankly deserve. The response of the federation was to say, “stop asking for things or we’ll stop letting you play”. It has lead to the awkward experience of watching players celebrate the greatest moments in national team history without even looking back at the coach (the representative of the dismissive system).

Meanwhile, England has a massive psychological investment in winning a world cup and proving that they can still win trophies in the game they invented. So, quite a lot of drama is afoot.

Other Cup-Dates

Likewise the men are wrapping things up in their cups as well, both Minnesota and Punjab saw this chapter of their seasons crash down around them. While that’s disappointing, there’s still a long way to go for their regular seasons, so wait and see.

Freiburg’s cup run started well, and the women’s side will see the same start soon. Rosenborg has another match up with Hearts to stay alive in Europe (Hearts having one goal on the road will make this match in Edinburgh extra important). Meanwhile, Ross County will look to stay alive in the League Cup this weekend.

Vamos Electricas!

It’s been hard to follow, but there is a competition for the Women’s Side in Emelec. They’ll play this year in the Campeonato Provincial (for Guayaquil), win the league and you’ll have a chance to move up to the top league. (It may be hard to track down player names and statistics, but we’ll do what we can.)

It will be a little easier to follow the results for the Griz soccer team when they kick off this week (and when they do, we’ll have every team on the table)

Player of the Week

Mathys Tourainne might have had the best moment of individual play, and the Electricas had a tremendous outing, but I couldn’t identify any players to award. So instead, I’ll give this week’s honor to the often named but as yet unheralded Jayden Nelson.

With their twenty two goals Emelec has suddenly gotten an extra half a goal a game which doesn’t make much difference to the points total, but does keep them ahead of Ross County. The one mover is Grenoble that sneaks up to fourth place…while Punjab’s rough Durand Cup has them much closer to the chasing pack.

Juventus 1 – 0 Freiburg (M-Europa League)

It seemed for a while like Freiburg would get a draw against one of the legendary teams of Europe in that team’s legendary stadium. But Juve did what has made them a legendary team and found a way to win. Not all hope is lost, if Freiburg wins at home (and doesn’t allow Juve to score) they can advance.

Emelec 2 – 1 Deportivo Cuenca (M-Copa Sudamericano)

There was some joy in continental competition, as Emelec snagged another spot destined for an Ecuadorian team in the Southamerican version of the Europa league. Miller Bolanos capitalized on one of the best dummy runs you’ll ever see by Samuel Sosa. Bolanos also netted the winner after Cuenca had equalized from the penalty spot. It’s becoming a habit for him.

Grenoble 2 – 1 Annecy (M)

After some underwhelming results, Grenoble got a key victory in the battle between the best sides in the French Alps. Mathias Phaeton made the most of his start up top, finding a way to work free and clear when the ball bounced into the box. Jordy Gaspar pegged an assist and a few crucial bits of defending to help Grenoble top their regional rivals.

Minnesota 1 – 1 NY Red Bulls

Bongokuhle Hlongwane got the Loons first goal in the snowy confines of St Paul, and after New York got even after a pressurized attack at the start of the second half, Minnesota had most of the opportunities to win. But as the score line shows…they didn’t.

Radnicki Nis 2 – 3 Vozdovac

The Dragons love clean sheets. They either take one (usually against the best teams in Serbia) or they enforce one (on pretty much anybody else). This marked only the fifth time in 26 matches this season that both teams scored. Given that they’ve won three, drawn one, and lost one, maybe they could play a little more aggressively and trust that the defense will see them through, especially as Milos Krunic was superb in goal throughout the first half. Mihajlo Neskovic continued his strong form with another goal, and Niska Vujanovic notched one that was drilled so hard he got offered a carpentry job.

Punjab FC 2 – 0 TRAU

It was a triumphant homecoming for Punjab as they finished off the I-League campaign lifting the trophy that they so richly deserved. They did take a little time to trounce their opponents before the party got underway, with (who else) Luka Macjen netting twice (including once from an “I dare you” chip shot) to complete a superb 12 match unbeaten run for the Warriors. Freiburg 2 – 1 Hoffenheim (M)

The best of the Black Forest looked to be heading for another underwhelming result in a week full of them, when Ristu Doan slashed a volley on a low cross and snatched a late winner. Freiburg continues to linger on the outer edges of the German title picture, so hopefully whatever happens against Juventus, they’ll be playing meaningful football for the next several months.

Saint Etienne 4 – 0 Grenoble (F)

The ladies of Grenoble struggled against an undefeated Saint Etienne side, as you might expect. Franny Arpine helped solidify the win for the top team in the table with an own goal. The loss drops Grenoble to 10th place in their league, but only 4 points separate them from 6th place…so…who knows.

Berekum Chelsea 1 – 0 Legon Cities

The Royals know…that things are really bleak. Another loss for Legon sees them drop into the relegation zone for Ghana’s Premier League. A year of refocusing may not be the worst thing, but we would sorely miss some of the elite talent that would likely look to leave as soon as the final whistle blows. (Of course there are still 13 matches to go, so things can change, it just doesn’t feel very optimistic around the Royals right now.

SGS Essen 2 – 1 SC Freiburg (F)

Adding to the pessimist punch bowl, the Frauen from Freiburg lost their perfect record against lower table teams when Essen broke out at the start of the second half. Worse there was also an early departure for Hasret Kayicki and general disarray for the attack.

Viking 2 – 0 Rosenborg (M-Cup)

Yes our Norwegian friends are back in action! And they’re also immediately out of it! Truthfully, the fact that Rosenborg’s last round of the Cup came back in June 2022, raises the question of how reliable any of this is. After all, they had time to sign a prolific striker, and sell him between the two rounds.

Emelec v. Tecnico Universitario (M): Postponed

The entire Ecuadorian league was put on a pause this weekend. (See the note below for more information and some total fiction)

Alebrijes 2 – 2 UDG

The first half was pretty tame, but when the skies opened up and rain started to fall in the second, the goals poured in as well (which isn’t too surprising given how poor both team’s defenses have been this season) Alebrijes took the lead, twice. They gave it back, twice. Julio Cruz and Ernesto Reyes got the goals and Octavio Paz (not the poet) gave them back. Still a point is a help for Alebrijes.

More interesting reasons Emelec’s game got cancelled

Choose for yourself the reason why Ecuador’s league was cancelled this week:

  • The League went on a special Turtle watching expidition in the Galapagos Islands (to learn your boys favorite spanish word: Tortuga!)
  • A truly terrible round of farts went through every locker room and no one could be near eachother.
  • The tv broadcasters asked for a rescheduling for undisclosed reasons
  • Queen Elsa of Arandelle froze every field and the league had to call in the super hot laser blasts of Iron Man to thaw it.

One of those reasons is true (hint: it’s the boring business one), the others should amuse my children. I know which I prefer.

Speaking of TV

For the first time in…well…ever…I watched the Loons on our TV downstairs. This was made possible by the Loons league making a new and stunning deal to put all their games on a computer streaming service rather than regular TV (which your mom and I stopped having). This is a new move in sports TV, while you can get some matches for some leagues in other countries on line (as we sometimes do with Freiburg), this is a big local league wide gamble. If it pays off you boys will probably never know another way of doing it. If not…well…this will be an odd bit of trivia.

Punjab Wins all the Awards

Most movie awards this weekend went to a oddball movie that involved hot-dog fingers, body slams, and googly eyes.

Most Indian Hero League awards went to Roundglass Punjab, who celebrated their status as the top team in the league with awards for Best Goalie (Kiran Limbu), Best Midfielder (Juan Mera), Best Coach (Staikos Vergetis). And with his two goals Luka Macjen won both the Golden Boot (for most goals scored) and the league MVP (since they’re sponsored by Hero motorcycles, they named the MVP the “League Hero” award…because they’re clever)

Player of the Week

It’s hard to settle on a player of the week. While Punjab can rightly lay claim to another trophy, their win was more matter of fact than inspiring. Vozdovac got a great showing from their goalie to keep them in a tightly contested match, but I’m going to give the edge to Ritsu Doan who’s late goal made a huge impact on the mood around Freiburg (despite his goalless drought, he’s been so fundamental to making space for others–and for inspiring in the World Cup that I think he’s overdue for some recognition)

Standings

Rosenborg broke the streak of starting seasons with wins, and in so doing saved Ross County from dropping to the bottom of the table (just six more months until Montana kicks off!). Meanwhile Punjab again claimed the top spot but they won’t be resting on their laurels as the Indian Super Cup will kick off in April with more drama afoot and a chance to see RoundGlass against their future Super League rivals.

Guingamp 2 – 4Grenoble (M)

It was a barn burner for the Alpiners, who fell behind on an ugly give away, came back, took the lead, lost it, and then scored twice in the last ten minutes to win the game. Jordan Tell had two goals but substitute Pape Meissa Ba assisted on the last two goals to ensure the victory.

Punjab FC 3 – 0 Kenkre FC

Juan Mera scored twice and Luka Macjen had the last one to break Kenkre pressure as Punjab cruised to the top of the table before their big match with Sreenidi Deccan.

Motherwell 1 – 1 Ross County

It’s good that a team comes alive when they have to, but unfortunate they wait that long. Once County fell behind they pushed hard for an equalizer. Jordy Hiluwa got it for them, but the Stags need more wins more quickly.

Nsoatreman 0 – 0 Legon Cities

The Royals have nothing but draws so far this year…and have no goals in the last 197 minutes. (Oof)

Sreenidi Deccan 4 – 0 Punjab FC

We’ll that didn’t go as planned.

Punjab was in prime position to expand their lead over their closest rivals, only to get punched in the kisser. worse, the potentially formidable front line duo of Macjen and Gyeltsen got nothing going…still with a game in hand they may be able to take the top of the table yet.

Venados 2 – 1 Alebrijes

Alebrijes got their first goal of the campaign, but it was small consolation in a losing effort.

Wolfsburg 6 – 0 Freiburg (M)

Let us never speak of this again

Hamilton Academical 1 – 0 Ross County

The Scottish FA Cup match ended in a shootout, and it was unfortunate that Jordan White, the Staggies most consistent striker was the first to falter (in the opening kick of the shootout no less).

Mohammedan SC 0 – 4 Punjab FC

Punjab came roaring back into action on the weekend with Juan Mera and Luka Macjen each scoring twice. Better still, seeing a fully integrated Chenchyo Geltsen getting in on the action is mouthwatering to say the least. (Well, it is in Punjab; other teams would be excused if things are more pants-wetting)

Stade Plabennec 0 – 1 Grenoble (Cup)

Granted, Stade Plabennec is not exactly a mighty rival for Grenoble (they are currently eighth in the Bretagne section of the fourth division), but still Grenoble should be proud to get the win they need when they need it, with Amine Sbai getting the winner early and the defense and midfield standing strong the rest of the match.

Freiburg 1 – 1 Frankfurt (M)

Freiburg continues to scuffle in 2023. The draw dropped them from 2nd to 5th, and while there’s still plenty of season to show off and reclaim their dream campaign momentum is not on their side. Things don’t get much easier with Borussia Dortmund and a DFB Pokal Octa-final to come.

Alebrijes 3 – 0 Dorados

Alebrijes’ 3 goal explosion, tripled their goal total for the season so far and finally got them some points. Julio Cesar Cruz struck twice with a pair of absolutely mind-boggling goals and the team blitzed Dorados for all their goals within a scant 15 minutes. Now they challenge will be to do it again.

50th to the MacKs Fun in the Sun

We had a wonderful time at your Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary, though it was a little short on soccer time (it didn’t seem right to skip a dinner to see if I could figure out how to watch Alebrijes on tv). But there was still a lot of great competition.

Alex learned the ropes of Mario Kart and boosted himself from consistent 12th place finishes on easy mode, to consistent 3rd place finishes on easy mode! He also became a dunk machine in water basketball (though it might have helped to be standing outside the pool rather than swimming in it). And Owen learned that twirling constantly isn’t exactly the best strategy in hot potato.

Setting aside all the competition things. Just being yourselves was a beautiful thing to behold.

Transfer Tips

JESSY BENNET IS BACK!! Our favorite Grenoblois midfielder has rejoined the Alpiners for the last stretch of the season, and I’m utterly delighted. He chipped in the assist to put them over Plabennec and we can only hope that he brings additional strength to a midfield that could use it. And what’s more…

CHENCHO GYELTSEN IS BACK!! The Bhutanese master striker has returned to Roundglass Punjab for the stretch run of the I-League campaign. Promotion is in the offing and Chencho is out to get it done! Double dragon fire power ahead for Punjab!! (I mean if you ignore the 4-0 drubbing against Sreenidi Deccan)

In less fun news Bikash Yumnam, the highly touted 19 year old defense prospect has left Punjab for the greener fields of the Indian Super League. We’re still excited to follow his journey on major news site the Athletic, and will never forget his roots.

USA-USA-USA

While we certainly invested in the American’s performance during December’s World Cup, it wasn’t exactly memorable or thrilling to see. But we have new found reasons to watch with the National Team Call Up of Rosenborg’s Samuel Rogers! Rogers will be the first American player we follow to have a run out for the national team (assuming he doesn’t get stuck on the bench during matches of little consequence…which, frankly, sounds kind of rude).

Players of the Week

We get to give out two awards this week and there’s no doubt that one has to go to Luka Macjen, who has been threatening to break through for a while but with three goals and multiple assists he left no doubt this round.

For the other recognition, we’re going to turn to someone we haven’t talked a lot about, but who comes highly recommmended: Yves-Franck Bambock from Grenoble’s Midfield. Bambock was a pivotal cog in both of les Alpiners wins providing strong defense and consistent support in the attack and we’ll gladly take the opportunity to shout his praises (especially alongside Jessy Bennet)

Standings

Much as we admire Freiburg, this was not the ideal week to kick off their 2023, as they slide in below even the equally unsteady Ross County and Oaxaca. Meanwhile, despite their defeat, Punjab continues to show serious strength at the top of the table (even if they are no loner perfect)

Results

Dundee United 2 – 1 Ross County

The Staggies got out to a good start thanks to (who else) Regan Charles-Cook. But Regan was also the impetus for the wheels falling off the wagon late in the second half. A foul in the box by Cook gave Dundee an equalizer from the penalty spot and the defense came undone in stoppage time to drop all the points on the road.

Raya2 Expansion 2 – 0 Alebrijes

Alebrijes’ unbeaten streak almost made it to February, but even though they put up 80 minutes of a shut out, it all came undone before the final whistle with Josue Gomez’s red card the low point of the Oaxacan’s first loss this year.

Ross County 3 – 3 Rangers

Regan Charles Cook and Jordan White scored twice to take the lead. despite giving the lead back in the second half, the Stags sprung one last counter attack to grab a late equalizer from Michael Wright.

Each year Ross County seems to get a solid result against the Glasgow duopoly of Rangers or Celtic. Unlike prior years, this result comes after a strong run of form rather than as a surprising one off result, so fingers crossed that this is less an aberration than the newly competitive normal.

Alebrijes 1 – 1 Atletico Morelia

The lotto machines of Albrijes were back at it on Saturday. (Because they’re great at DRAWS…get it…no? You’re still kids…sigh…dad jokes disarmed). The team has been well served by Defensive Midfielder and iron man Jorge Sanchez. The hard news is versatile defender Ernesto Reyes got a red card near the end of the match which will force Oaxaca to play without one of their most reliable defenders.

Legon Cities FC 3 – 0 Eleven Wonders

Croster Obour has come into his own as an attacking target for Jonah Attaquye. While the Royals are still firmly stuck in the bottom half of the league, they do have enough at both ends of the pitch (see the excellent stop on a free kick at the edge of the box) to feel confident about staying up (knock on all the wood).

Not sure, but sure seems like the audio and video are out of synch….sorry.

Le Puy 2 – 2 Grenoble Foot [F]

After a few weeks laid low by COVID and bad pitches, the ladies of Grenoble were back in action this weekend and came away with a draw.

If I’m reading the summary from Grenoble Foot Info correctly (a slightly dicey proposition), it sounds like Le Puy had the advantage early on, but after half time, with the addition of Adama Tamba to the field Les Iseroises found their flow again, netting goals from defender Fanny Arpin and striker Claudia Fabre.

Ross County 1 – 1 Aberdeen

It was another weekend of quick counter attacking football for the Staggies. But the strategy that earned them a surprising lead against Rangers only gave them a glimmer of a chance against Aberdeen. Ross Laidlaw was excellent in his return to the Staggies goal and that combined with a second half goal from Ross Callachan was enough.

CD Tepatitlan de Morelos 1 – 2 Alebrijes

Julio Cesar Cruz had a heckuva game in an end to end affair that provided ample shots at goal. He bedeviled some lax defending and dominated on set pieces. (Oxaca’s speed and strength on set pieces has paid huge dividends for the side this season.) As a result, Oaxaca got their 9th point 6 weeks ahead of their pace from the fall campaign.

Fuck Racism

I’ve said it before, and I’ll (sadly) probably say it again, racism has no place in our society.

This week Stags striker Regan Charles Cook on the receiving end of social media abuse. Further details were unclear, but it seems likely that Rangers fans were unable to accept that they could draw with a team in good form and took it out on County’s best scorer in a way that showed just how sad and pathetic their lives are.

More than a move…

Julie Blakstad: always awesome

From our start we’ve found players to root for and care about. But we’ve only found one Julie Blakstad. The fact that she’s more your age than mine, that she works hard, has fun, and plays so flipping well, is just a delight. This week she signed with English giants Manchester City. Hard as it is to see her step away from Rosenborg, It genuinely could not happen to a more deserving person. Tusen Takk Julie!

Comings and Goings

Beyond Julie’s big move (*sniff, sniff*) there were some other things that happened before the transfer window closed on Monday.

Jordan Tell helped lead Clermont Foot to Ligue 1 last year (at the expense of Grenoble). During the first half of the year in the top flight his minutes have declined so he’ll look to lead another team back up as the newest wing partner with Yoric Ravet. The Alpiners weren’t done there bringing aboard Gambian forward Abdoulie Sanyang, and young defender Allan Tchaptchet (who spent a chunk of time at Southampton). Meanwhile Rosenborg has brought on Argentine Renzo Giampaoli, a 21 year old Right Back, from Boca Juniors. (Fingers crossed he joins Emmanuel Reynoso on our list of beloved Boca transfers to our teams).

Meanwhile, Minnesota United said adios to Tomas Chacon, the talented young Uruguayan who ended up in training purgatory and never found his way out. And Grenoble said adieu to David Henen who left for Belgium.

Long Live Aurora!

This is awesome–I regret not buying shares, but to be fair, they went pretty fast. Our new United view of Minnesota will cover both the Loons and Aurora.

Player of the Week

After the week we just had, it’s clear that we’ll need to recognize either a Stag or an Alebrije, given the better record over all, and his role marshaling the attack and delivering on set pieces, it makes sense to give the nod to Jorge Sanchez.

Standings Update

After missing a shot to top the table, Legon Cities got themselves up into second place this week with their dominant showing against Eleven Wonders. The busy week also helped Ross County and Alebrijes enforce their position off the bottom of the standings.

Rosenborg BK 7 – 1Arna Bjornar [F]

Rosenborg had all the flow in this game, dominating from whistle to whistle. Lisa Marie Utland led off, and Julie Blakstad and Sarah Kanutte Forness added a pair a piece. We even got a closer sense of Norway’s : Blakstad, Bragstad and Bronstad.

Grenoble Foot 2 – 0 Nimes Metropole Gard [F]

The ladies of the Alps continued their strong opening weeks of the campaign, surging to a four way tie atop their half of Ligue 2. It was Andrea Compper’s show on Saturday, with a pair of goals to win going away.

FC Carl Zeiss Jena 1 – 5 SC Freiburg [F]

To complete the clean sweep of our women’s European leagues, Freiburg ceded an early goal on a strong attack. And then, they struck back. It was Hasret Kayicki’s hat trick that set the tone of consistently capitalizing on Jena’s defensive lapses and the ladies of Breigsau never looked back.

Minnesota United 1 – 3 Colorado

Despite an early goal from Adrien Hounou and a man advantage in the second half, the Loons couldn’t get a point at home. They might explain it away with a complaint that many top talents were away on international duty. But another explanation is that Minnesota just isn’t that good.

Northern Colorado Bears 1 – 0 Montana Grizzlies

The Griz dropped a game to their mascot match in Big Sky Conference Play. Greely has been a haunting locale for the Griz, going winless there in the last 12 years (back when Camilla Xu was in second grade). For the first time in a while, the Griz defenders were second best, with the Bears pounding the net, and the Griz limited to 3 shots on target.

Alebrijes 2 – 2 Jaibos

Again, the Oaxacans got themseleves got into a tough situation falling behind by two goals in the first half. To be fair, after the utterly befuddled defending, two goals was a gift. But a pair of penalties (one of which led to the ejection of Jaibos’ keeper) gave them enough life to get the late equalizer courtesy of Julio Cesar Cruz.

Around the World in a Couple Hot seconds

Sallai’s Strike

Several players from our favorite sides made appearances in international duty this last weekend: here’s a quick snapshot of how they fared.

Most of our action happened in Europe, and it turned out pretty darn well. Vozdovac’s striker Justas Lascikas got a goal in Lithuania’s win over Bulgaria (it was also Lithuania’s first points in seven qualifying matches). The Loon’s Robin Lod factored in Finland’s win over Kazakhstan, but neither he nor club/country teammate Jukka Raitalta could stop the loss to Ukraine (leaving the Finns one point out of qualification position with two to play). Freiburg’s Ermedin Demirovic was a substitute for Bosnia against the same teams to no avail (B&H is two points back with two to play). But the match highlight was probably Roland Sallai who got the opening goal in Wembly stadium against the mighty England national team. That goal set up a draw to end England’s 12 year winning streak in competitive home games. The point also kept Hungary alive (if only mathematically)

Meanwhile in Africa, Romain Metanire was on the field for both legs of the matches Madagascar split with DR Congo, but their hopes of another Cinderella story at Qatar 2022 are effectively over. Grenoble’s David Hennen played the first half in Togo’s draw against Congo (just the Regular Republic variety) in similar academic matches. While Emelec had native son Joao Rojas came on twice for Ecuador’s legendary Enner Valencia in both the win over Bolivia and the loss to Venezuela.

And in friendly matches: Michael Boxall helped the Kiwis to a sweep of their games (against Bahrain and Curacao, but still).

That didn’t last long…

Somehow, after all the praise we heaped on Claire Howard, Camilla Xu took one of her predecessor’s records while still in her freshman season. By keeping Northern Colorado off the board for the first 38 minutes, Xu set a new program record with 703 scoreless minutes. Breaking a seemingly massive streak. Then, of course, Northern Colorado broke the streak 2 minutes later…sigh.

Player of the Week

While Sallai and Lascikas can be proud of their contributions to their countries, this was a ladies week and the woman at the center of a European sweep was Hasret Kayicki. Her hat trick and consistent leadership has buoyed Freiburg during an up and down season..and even if it means that she like Klara Buhl before her, leaves Freiburg for greener pastures/bank accounts, it’s a pleasure to see her strive every week.

Alebrijes 2 – 3 Tepatilan

The Oaxacans continue to struggle to catch anything remotely resembling a break. Even after another Julio Cesar Cruz equalizer and a Lizandro Echeverria goal to take the lead, they couldn’t hold on. In 360 minutes this season, they’ve lead for 18 of them (5% of the season). Clearly there’s still work to be done in the back.

FC Minsk 1 – 2 Rosenborg [F-Europe]

Rosenborg got to host playoff games en route to the Women’s Champion’s League and they kicked off with a big win over FC Minsk (courtesy of your favorite tandem and mine: Julie Blakstad and Lisa-Marie Utland)

Rennes 2 – 0 Rosenborg [M-Europe]

It’s not terribly surprising that Rosenborg struggled against a team from the top tier of French football. And needing two or more goals at home is something they can manage…if they’re on point. (Sidebar: Baptiste Santamaria made his Rennes debut after leaving Freiburg last week…so, the revolving door of Rennes and our favorite teams remains).

Creighton Bluejays 2 – 1 Montana Grizzlies

The Griz had an adventure getting to Omaha (good thing they’re elite athletes, it made running across Denver Airport a little easier), but once there they gave the bigger program all the could handle. Caitlin Rogers put in an iron woman shift on the back line (going all 108 minutes), and Montana’s own Josie Windaur got her first career goal in the garnet and silver, but in the end the Griz fell on a late winner from Creighton. Still a positive start for the team looking to punch above expectations for the Big Sky Conference.

Metalac 0 – 1 Vozdovac

Nikola Vujnovic kept up his strong form with another goal on a stellar little run. Better still, the Dragons’ defense delivered their first clean sheet of the season.

Freiburg 2 – 1 Dortmund [M]

One of the German giants came to Breisgau and left disappointed. Freiburg got ahead early (thanks Vincenzo) and didn’t let up (that second goal…wowza…Roland Sallai did just about everything). But after epic victories, it’s important not just to talk about the goals that won it, but also the defense that made it possible. So kudos to the defensive core of Phillip Leinhart, Nico Schlotterback, and Christian Gunter for stopping a star studded offense.

Grenoble 2 – 0 Quevilly [M]

The sun lifted les grenoblois off the bottom of the table, and for the first time in forever, everybody seemed to be on point. Mableu, Nestor and Monfray held down the back while Yoric Ravet lead the line with both a goal and an assist. Plus Charles Pickel did his best Jessy Bennet. (It was so convincing that right after the game he got to leave Grenoble!)

Minnesota United 0 – 0 Sporting KC

I was very excited to watch this game with you boys. Covid’s return meant I couldn’t take you. Technology issues meant we missed the first 15 minutes. 10 minutes later you decided you wanted a snack and then forgot about the game to go play in the backyard.

We made the right choice.

Stats suggest the Loons should have scored three goals, instead they got zero. The inability to put the biscuit in the basket is starting to drive even the most loyal fans up a wall…

Levante 4 – 3 Rosenborg [F-Europe]

Rosenborg wasn’t able to launch themselves into the group stages of the women’s champion’s league despite home field advantage as Levante prevailed in an epic encounter. The Troll Jenter were chasing the game for the much of the match and this might be the first time we’ve ever seen Kristine Nostmo so wrong footed and out of her element. (It was also by far the most goals scored against the black and white in our time writing about the team). Again Blakstand and Utland delivered vital goals, but it wasn’t enough and Rosenborg will have to wait a year for a shot at the biggest stage in Europe.

Nueve de Octubre 2 – 2 Emelec [M]

It was definitely a point win for Los bombillos, who looked to be facing their second loss in 2021 Liga Pro (the last one also to Nueve). Down two goals and one player with ten minutes to go, Joao Rojas scored twice on a pair of…close…offsides calls. It was all they needed to salvage a point and keep them in 2nd place.

Ross County 2 – 4 Rangers

I try to be optimistic, but I really doubted County’s ability to keep up with Rangers. Granted, the didn’t really keep up, but they scored twice and weren’t played off their own field so…yeah, I guess…moral victory?

Rosenborg 5 – 0 Odd [M]

The troll boys handled Odd with ease, with Stefano Vecchia notching two goals, Verbjørn Hoff getting two assists and Emil Konradsen Ceide getting one of each. (That even leaves out Noah Holm’s blistering run to score) We hope they still feel fresh for the match with Rennes next week (maybe Vecchia and Ceide merit another runout together…just saying))

Montana Grizzlies 0 – 1 Portland Pilots

While the Pilots have a storied history, their recent past gave the Griz some hope, but it wasn’t to be as both back lines stood tough until a beauty of a curler beat blue haired Elizabeth Todd for a gorgeous winner. Again the Griz were tough against a high profile opponent, and Owen got to watch with me as Taylor Hansen flexed her leadership, Ava Samuelson showcased her fresh flair, and McKenzie Kilpatrick did our name proud.

News & Notes

Gre-NOOOOOOOOO-ble

The French side mired at the bottom of Ligue 2 in desperate need of some good news went and found the opposite this week by sending Charles Pickel to Portugal (immediately after his man of the match performance) and releasing captain and strong defender Jerome Mombris. The comments are a special blend of sports fan frustration and French ennui. We thank Charles and Jerome for their work, and would like to Jerome that Madagascar defenders [like his teammate/pal Romain Metanire] are welcome at Minnesota United…just saying…

Never vacuum

The only goal in The Griz’s game this weekend was scored when we were vacuuming (well, I was vacuuming, Owen, you were running away and flopping on any soft surface you could find). The lesson is clear: never vacuum. [Another valuable lesson watching the game, be like the bros who rocked overalls, bare chests, and cowboy hats to a soccer game…that’s how we do soccer in the big MT]

Way to Advertise Women in Europe!

I knew there was some news about Rosenborg facing reigning European women’s champs Barcelona (they meet in a friendly Saturday), but in doing that research I uncovered an utterly unremarked upon entry in the local team history, namely that our favorite lady trolls vied for qualification in Europe this week. Some reviews and the kind public service provided by femfootball let us cover it, but a little too late.

Player of the Week

For 10 weeks, Emelec and Rosenborg have dominated the player of the week conversation. Even when other teams were in action their performances never quite measured up. This week there were great showings from all of Rosenborg and Joao Rojas. But there was also Nikola Vjunovic and Yoric Ravet bringing back some struggling sides. But we’ll go with Christian Gunter who both bottled up Dortmund darling Erling Haaland, delivered some delicious passes, and set a new Freiburg record for appearances en route to their win.

Standings Update

And for the first time in a long time, we have a new leader in the standings!! The pair of defeats dropped the Griz from the top to…well..very nearly the top, as Rosenborg was there to capitalize despite their own inconsistent week. It’s going to be a battle for the top as we enter the final four months of the campaign.

Julio César Cruz bagged the first goal of this year’s campaign on a simple but effective attack. However, it wasn’t enough to net Oaxaca’s first win.

Arminia Bielefeld 0 – 0 Freiburg

Freiburg was unable to find a way past Beilefeld’s keeper, but can take some comfort from a strong attack that kept their opponents on the back foot.

Sandviken 2 – 0 Rosenborg BK [F]

With their second loss to Sandviken, there’s no denying it anymore: the unbeatable Rosenborg is not the best team in the Topp Serien. Hard as it is to admit, it does focus the campaign not on staying unbeaten, but on reaching the Champions league (So far, so good)

Niort 1 – 0 Grenoble [M]

Mon dieu. It’s getting grim in Grenoble, as manager Maurizio Jacobacci has yet to win a match and our Alpiners are rooted to the bottom of the table.

Minnesota United 0 – 1 Los Angeles Galaxy

Another week, another Loon’s home match I had to miss. This time there wasn’t much to see as despite a strong defense and the usual Bébelo magic, the Loons couldn’t finish their chances.

Emelec 3 – 0 CSD Macara

Despite being a man down for much of the match (why cleat someone on your run Sebastian Rodriguez…why?), Los Bombillos dominated. Jose Cevallos had become an invaluable target man (just ask Dixon Arroyo), and Facundo Barcelo offers another bolt of speed to burn the opposition. Don’t look now, but Emelec’s just two points off the lead in the league and gunning for a season sweep of trophies.

Vozdovac 3 – 2 Novi Pazar

With Nikola Vujnovic leading the way the Red Dragons got another win. None of the goals were beautifully developed, but beauty and Serbia don’t exactly go together, I mean, just watch the wrasslin’ move that took down Milos Pantovic in the second half…eeks.

Mjondalen 1 – 2 Rosenborg [M]

While Carlo Holse hasn’t been the big name on recent Rosenborg score sheets he had a great game here supported by goal scorers Anders Konradsen and Erland Dahl Reitan. It still took some doing for Rosenborg to withstand the final onslaught of attacks, but they managed to make it across the finish line.

San Jose Earthquakes 1 – 1 Minnesota United

A late night match that I wasn’t going to stay up for, the Loons started out with an uncharacteristic gaffe from Bakye Dibassy at the back. Even with the Quakes losing a man a few minutes later, Minnesota struggled to get much of anything connected (playing two games in three days can have that effect on you).

Here come the Griz

It’s Taylor time! The Griz will follow the lead of fifth year seniors Taylor Stoeger in the front and Taylor Hansen in the back as they seek to cement their spot at the top of our MacKenzie Cup standings. The big challenge there will be extending their competition beyond the Big Sky. While Conference games made up 9 of their 11 matches in the spring, they start out with 8 non-conference games including three against power sides like Creighton, Gonzaga, and Boise State. Even their conference schedule is less comfortable with 5 road games (including at co-favorites Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado) as opposed to 4 home matches.

Hopes for Afghanistan

After 20 years, the United States armed forces (including a few dozen of your dad’s high school classmates), have left the nation of Afghanistan. The war started shortly after your mother and I met. It continued long enough for me to teach refugees from it and future soldiers in it. And then, we left with the same people in power as when it began and the same threat to women, girls, and contrary thinkers as we had at the beginning. We hope that the people of Afghanistan are safe and secure and remember that soccer is nothing next to that.

Player of the Week

Despite the lasting Kristoffer Zachariassen sized hole in our Rosenborg hearts, Anders Konradsen’s great form has gone a long way to easing the pain.

Standings Update

The Griz get back into action this week with their lead on the line. Kicking off with the Big East’s Creighton (alma mater of a couple Loons players), is going to put them to the test right away. Meanwhile, Alebrijes slides to the bottom of the table.
