Week 50: Turnabout is Fair Play

Week 50: Turnabout is Fair Play

Scores

Independiente del Valle 0 – 3 CS Emelec [M]

For the first time in a while Emelec didn’t seem to have much of anything going for them. Worse, this loss gave loathed rivals Barcelona sole claim to the top spot in the league

Rosenborg BK 1 – 0 Mjondalen [M]

Rosenborg snapped their skid, but it wasn’t exactly convincing. Åge Hareide’s team couldn’t find a way through throughout regular time despite dominating the run of play. But Ol Piercing Blue Eyes himself Kistoffer Zachariasen saved the day with a last minute winner.

Asante Kotoko 1 – 0 Legon Cities

Against the most legendary club in Ghanaian soccer the Royals looked majestic again in name only. The defense should be commended for their resilience but now would be the time for the attack to flourish as well. (h/t Fatua Duda for winning commendations despite losing)

Freiburg 2 – 0 Arminia Bielefeld [M]

Christian Streich switched to a three man back line a month ago. In the four matches with that formation they’ve drawn twice and won once. It’s not a tremendous turnabout but it’s a big improvement from the side that drifted down the table in October. Phillip Leinhart and Vincenzo Grifo’s surge in form sure helps too.

Aberdeen 2 – 0 Ross County

Speaking of drifting down the table, the Staggies have sunk to the bottom of the premiership. They haven’t gotten a point from the league since early November, and haven’t won since two months before that. They may still have a shot at cup trophies, but their time in the top league may be done after this year.

FK Vozdovac 0 – 2 Partizan Belgrade

I’d be lying if I said I expected anything else, but kudos to the dragons for holding the league leaders scoreless for more than one half!

Grenoble Foot 4 – 0 Dunkerque [M]

Grenoble’s performance in the shadow of the Alps was nothing short of dominant. Again led by Jessy Benet and rampaging full backs Jordy Gaspar and Jerome Mombris they looked every bit the first place (yes, first place) team they have become.

CS Emelec 3 – 0 El Nacional [M]

Estadio George Capwell would have been rocking had people been allowed in. A win over bottom of the table Nacional isn’t exactly surprising, and never seemed to be in doubt., but Jose Cevallos’ brace and another clean sheet sure feels good.

Meppen 0 – 1 SC Freiburg [W]

Meppen has struggled this year, and as Freiburg grows into form they looked strong throughout. Lina Bürger’s late winner was well deserved.

Rosenborg 3 – 1 Molde [M]

A week after a red card got him an early shower, it was a day of good Dino Islamovic. It couldn’t have come at a better time. His brace against fellow top 4 side Molde went a long way to seal a shot at European soccer.

News & Notes

See You Loons

As has been the habit each year, Minnesota United celebrated the end of the season by declining a big pile of contracts.

It’s not too surprising that Kei Kamara and third string keeper Greg Ranjitsingh were let loose. Frequent role players Jose Aja, Aaron Shoenfeld, and Raheem Edwards were a little more surprising, but, without ticket sales, costs must be cut.

HAO! Rosenborg!

O’Rielly trading Stars and Stripes for just stripes?

On the BBC’s world football podcast American soccer legend Heather O’Reilly admitted that she felt tempted to come back from retirement for a shot at the European Champions League.

A year into her retirement, O’Reilly might need some time to gear up again. So she’s likely have to target the 21-22 campaign. She’s also working as a coach of younger players. So that would be a good thing to continue abroad. And if she seeks to just play in the champions league, a Scandinavian side makes sense….chances are you see where I’m going with this.

Ms O’Reilly meet Rosenborg, Rosenborg meet Heather O’Reilly. (Blakstad, Clausen, O’Reilly…I’ve got goose bumps).

Us 59 – 1 Trump

Another score from the election. This certainly looks decisive. With no time left on the clock, there’s no real chance for a comeback. But President Trump continues to insist that he’s winning and refusing to leave the field. So…not unlike games I used to play against your uncles in the backyard.

Player of the Week

Since they came back from COVID Cancellations, Jordy Gaspar has played 518 of Grenoble’s 540 minutes. In that time, they’ve allowed only two goals and scored ten. He’s been excellent on both sides of the ball, and this week his assist gives us an excuse to finally reward him.

Plus, Gaspar looks good in Pink

Weeks 35 AND 36: Teaching and Writing are Uncomfortable Bedfellows

Weeks 35 AND 36: Teaching and Writing are Uncomfortable Bedfellows

For the first time since probably mid February there were both a bunch of games and a full time job on bmy plate… so rather than go back chronologically through the games that have happened here are some overriding takeaways from each side’s last two weeks.

Scores

Awful Alebrijes

Alebrijes 1 – 3 Dorados

Tepitlan 2 – 0 Alebrijes

270 minutes into the season, Alebrijes has scored once from open play. They have a habit of ceding early and staying behind. Last years trophy feels a long way away and not just because time is a flat circle in Corona-ville.

Ehhhh….Emelec….

Emelec 2 – 1 LDU Portoveijo

Técnico Universarito 2 – 0 Emelec

El Nacional 2 – 1 Emelec (M)

Emelec 2 – 2 Independiente de Valle

As Ecuador works double time to complete their two part season, Emelec seems like they’re biding their time waiting for the second half. In 4 of the 6 games since the return from COVID, they’ve allowed two goals. And only scored that many, twice.

Finding Freiburg

SC Freiburg 1 – 2 Bayern Leverkusen {W}

While the most consistently overachieving men’s team in Germany gears up for a new season without several stars, the women’s side started back without talisman Klara Bühl. Rebecca Knaak’s first half penalty seemed promising, but a late collapse left them frustrated in their opener.

Grinding Out Grenoble

Grenoble 5 – 3 Toulouse (M)

It wasn’t pretty at the back, but it got led bleus in the Win column for the first time in a while. Willy Semedo and Moussa Kailou Djitte exploited Left Back Kelvin Adou for three goals and our double star Yoric Ravet (formerly of Freiburg) got two assists with Brice Mableu recording a critical svae en route to an entertaining win in front of home fans (hey, remember them?!)

Missing in Minnesota

FC Dallas 3 – 1 Minnesota United

Houston 3 – 0 Minnesota United

Minnesota United 4 – 0 Real Salt Lake

All that good feeling and confidence evaporated pretty fast outside the Orlando bubble. But in true Minnesota sports form, just when you think you can write them off, they kick it into gear and make it interesting.

Heartbreaking but interesting. It might as well be the new state motto.

Ruling Rosenborg

Roa 2 – 3 Rosenborg BK (W)

Rosenborg BK 4 – 2 Breidablik (M-E)

Rosenborg BK 1 – 1 Arna Bjornar (W)

Rosenborg 2 – 2 Stabaek

LSK KVinner 0 – 1 Rosenborg {W}

Three more unbeaten matches for the Trolljenta put them in second place with a game in hand. The huge win in Lillestrom was especially valuable in fending off a fellow title contender.

Meanwhile, Åge Hareide and the Trollgutte have also been unbeaten of late, though their run hasn’t had the same effect on the table. Bodø/Glimt continue to run away with the league but RBK is closing ground on the top 3. That also coincides with a strong win in their first Europa League Qualifier dispatching Iceland’s Breidablik.

Ross County’s Return to Earth

Livingston 1 – 0 Ross County

The Staggies only lost a game. But they lost it to a bottom of the table side. And they slipped to sixth. And they now trail Celtic and Aberdeen who have each played two fewer matches. Things still look better than last year, but not quite title contention…yet…

Wild Variations at Vozdovac

Backa Backa Palanka 2 – 1 FK Vozdovac

Another week another wild start in Serbia. This time the first goal came inside two minutes. All the others were notched before the game turned ten minutes old. Then bupkus. Still, Vozdovac has put a goal in every time they’ve played this season, so they’re halfway there.

News & Notes

More Flights from Freiburg

It must be said, I really liked Robin Koch. He was as integral and fundamental an element of Freiburg’s success as coach Christian Streich or just mirroring fundamental German efficiencies.

*Sniff* Good Luck Robin!

It also seemed obvious that he was bound for greener pastures. Still, it stings to see him leave for Leeds United. Perhaps the Premier League will give a wider audience an appreciation for the Head Cook. But we’ll always get to play the hipster card of knowing him when. (Incoming Midfielder Guus Til hasn’t exactly lit up Spartak Moscow…so…fingers crossed)

Celtic Takes the Low Road and Staggies take the high road…

And County gets fans in the stands ‘afore ye.

Sure, Celtic might have hundreds of trophies, legions of fans, oodles of cash, and 4 members of the national team, but Ross County are leading the way in getting fans back to the field.

Careful testing, tracing and automated grounds should help the highlanders stay separate and stay safe before next weekend’s clash with the 9 consecutive trophy winning Glaswegians. 500 fans may be a pittance, but it’s a 500 fold increase over what players have dealt with in the first two months of the league.

So while Celtic has all that cache, and got a two game suspension for playing quarantine-breaker Boli Bolingboli (sidebar: best name ever), Ross County can have 500 supporters live to 0 for the Hoops.

Player of the Week

Perhaps goal scorers deserve more credit. Perhaps I’m biased. But perhaps Yoric Ravet is the player we not only get to follow, he’s the player we are meant to follow.

Yoric, we are getting to know him well

Week 34: Foolish challenges

Week 34: Foolish challenges

Scores

Alebrijes 1 – 0 Leones Negros

The Oaxacans put an exclamation mark on their return with a thrilling stoppage time winner from Alejandro Ochoa Despite.. Due to Fernando Plascencia shanking a penalty kick gift five minutes before, Ochoa took matters into his own feet with a well placed (though not beautiful ball).

Emelec 2 – 0 Mushuc Runa

Things were brighter in Guayaquil at the start of this week with Los azules walking home with all 3 points. Granted it was against a bottom of the table opponent and they only scored in stoppage time. And sure, it was largely thanks to a silly penalty and a well worked team goal against an exhausted opposition, but we’ll take it.

Minnesota United 1 – Sporting KC 2

A home fortress isn’t very imposing when no fans are allowed in. So it was in the Loons’ return home, where only slipshod defending and an ugly pair of own goals put anything on the board.

Avaldsnes 1 – 1 Rosenborg BK (W)

Still undefeated, though it was a close thing. Julie Blakstad opened the scoring before RBK was bottled up by their opponents. A second half equalizer by Katrina Gorry was deserved, if a bit embarrassing for the Troll girls.

St. Mirren 1 – 1 Ross County

The Staggies still sit in the top 4, but the suddenly sputtering offense doesn’t bode well. It took an absolutely grisly challenge from Saints’ Joe Shaughnessy on Ross Stewart to provide a quality opening. That the opening required Michael Gardyne to bank the ball off of two opponents into the back of the net probably means the team could use a new game plan.

Rodez 1 – 0 Grenoble (M)

When last we saw our favorite French side in action, they were struggling to find the net. After a long break, Grenoble is still struggling. Despite taking twice the number of shots as the home side, Grenoble couldn’t put le croissant in le sac. Good news, 37 weeks left to get it together.

Mjondalen 0 – 2 Rosenborg BK (M)

After the surprising segue from the effective Trond Henriksen to new manger Åge Hareide, it might have taken a moment for RBK to click. Instead the defense was stout. The midfield was imperious. And this week’s rotating cast of strikers were dangerous enough to consistently clatter the woodwork despite coming up empty. Another win puts them firmly in contention for Europe half way through the year, and also positions them well to start the quest for Europa league this week.

FK Vozdovac 1 – 1 Zlatibor

Newly promoted Zlatibor got their first SuperLiga point in this draw. Pleased as we are for them, we’re more pleased the Red Dragons got a point too rather than folding like a fresh piriogi. (Also a special hat tip to Justas Lasickas for the extra clever flick to set up a golden chance)

SC Barcelona 2- 1 Emelec

The week didn’t end as beautifully as it began for Los Bombillos. Though Roberto Ordones put them ahead with a blistering strike, the defense has a bit to answer for in giving up a win in el Clasico del Astillero (Shipyard Clasico). First an ugly and foolish challenge by Jackson Rodriguez allowed an easy penalty, and an awfully awkward turnover by Leandro Vega sealed the comeback for los Amarillos. (Gluttons for punishment, watch here)

News & Notes

Trondheim Takeovers

Age Hareide looking a bit like
your great-great Uncle Stan (Alechtron.com)

The big news in the Eliteserien this week was that Age Hareide had taken over the men’s team at RBK. While the side had performed well under caretaker manager Trond Henriksen, the legendary Norwegian manager fresh from titles in Sweden and a quarterfinal spot in the World Cup was too tempting to let go.

Less publicized but equally cool was Julie Blakstad taking over the RBK Instagram account to keep us all up to speed on her Calculus test. It’s good to know she’s a typical teen, it’s harder to accept she both out-plays and out-maths our family

Bebe-Loon

Look! There’s cheese IN the burger!!
From El Litoral

About a year’s worth of courtship finally paid off as Minnesota United signed Emmanuel Bebelo Reynoso from Argentine giants Boca Juniors. Given Friday’s misadventures any creativity and flair will be deeply welcomed (though the Loons’ tendency to have one guy play hero-ball may yet make this a disaster).

Player of the Week

Seriously, C’mon man….

Whenever there’s a week without a standout performance, I find myself looking to recognize and appreciate a lower wattage player who has quietly contributed for several weeks. In that spirit, take a bow Kristoffer Zachariassen, in addition to leading the team in scoring, and leading all our teams with goals from nearly impossible angles, the steady, strong showings in the middle of the field have made all the attacking magic possible. So Takk! (As for the crazy good looks, c’mon man, leave something for the rest of us)
